Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... VIII THE Grjeco-latin ARYAN Let Us go back for a while to that other wave of Aryan blood which presumably flowed westward from Asia into Europe by the southern route. If the MidAsian origin of the Aryan peoples be accepted as fairly proven, it is interesting to note how the two great westward streams of migration, the northern and the southern, would in their journeying be continually forced farther and farther apart, and how by the interposition of natural barriers they would be kept from ever uniting or even drawing near toeach other again. First, the diverging lines of the two rivers and the lateral plains, with the broadening wedge of the desert of Kizilkoom between; then the forbidding wastes of the Khivan desert; then the snowy wall of the Caucasus; and still beyond the black waters of the Euxine and its adjunct, the Azov; and yet beyond all these the rugged crests of the Balkans and the Carpathians; and then the great Alpine center of Mid-Europe to force them still farther apart. And so the two streams, starting from one common home, would keep ever diverging, and never again intermingle, or cross each other's paths even, in their long march westward to the waters of the greater seas which lay in the dimness beyond. This much we know, however, that it is a separate race life, a separate race history, a separate and distinct race development which we are to trace in peoples who were once of one kin. It is this fact with which we now come to deal, and to which the discussion thus far has largely been preliminary. Whether the two peoples which we now know re. spectively as Greek and Latin left the primitive race home as one people and afterward separated, is not settled, possibly never can be definitely settled. Yet certain...

Excerpt from Race Life of the Aryan Peoples, Vol. 1: The Old World Every masterful race of the world's history has its epic. It is the tale of the fathers told to the sons. But side by side with the spoken epic is another, unspoken, yet truer and deeper. It is the tale of the race life, not told in words, but lived in deeds done. And the epic lived is always more wonderful than the epic told. The true epic is found, not in the story of the battles or of the deeds of the rulers, but in the race life. In the perspective of time men become less, man grows greater. Race life is broader, deeper, richer than the life of any man, or of any men. The great men of a race are only an evolution of its race force; and the reserve force is greater than its product. They are indices, race marks. The great man is as the mountain peak; for the mountains that loom up above the wide-spread plain are not the land; they are only the land-marks, marks of the land. Kings are the accident; the people, the law. The Greek colonies, not Ilium and Atreides Agamemnon, are the true epic of Hellas, vastly more marvelous. So of the Aryan folk; not the Vedas, not the Avestas, not the Iliad, or the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Joseph Pomeroy Widney offers a history of the Aryan race, which when this book was published in 1907 was thought a branch of the Indo-European and Caucasian peoples. The author practiced as a medical doctor, having first gained experience during service in the U.S. Civil War. Over many years he became interested in the ancestry and development of humanity, carrying out research from the existing knowledge of his time. Widney developed a theory that successive generations of individual races developed distinguishing characteristics due to the qualities of the soil in which their food was cultivated, and the climate in which they resided. Much categorization ensues, with the author assigning Aryan groups and subgroups to various regions of the world. In the modern day, Widney's investigations have been proven incorrect. The advent of genetic science disproved the entire hypothesis of an Aryan race, with human lineage shown to have progressed in a completely different fashion. Nevertheless, this book is an illustrative historic example of how human ancestry and racial development were studied and discussed prior to rigorous scientific experiment and the resulting conclusive evidence and data.
