The correlations between physical systems provide significant information about their collective behaviour – information that is used as a resource in many applications, e.g. communication protocols. However, when it comes to the exploitation of such correlations in the quantum world, identification of the associated ‘resource’ is extremely challenging and a matter of debate in the quantum community. This dissertation describes three key results on the identification, detection, and quantification of quantum correlations. It starts with an extensive and accessible introduction to the mathematical and physical grounds for the various definitions of quantum correlations. It subsequently focusses on introducing a novel unified picture of quantum correlations by taking a modern resource-theoretic position. The results show that this novel concept plays a crucial role in the performance of collaborative quantum computations that is not captured by the standard textbook approaches. Further, this new perspective provides a deeper understanding of the quantum-classical boundary and paves the way towards establishing a resource theory of quantum computations.

Abstract: Disentangling the sources of complexity in the dynamics of quantum many-body systems, and identifying those which are of genuinely quantum character, is both of fundamental interest and important for potential applications. Interference, which is rooted in the coherence of the many-body quantum state, and particle-particle interactions are two main ingredients for complex behaviour. In this dissertation, we develop a theory of many-body coherence, based on specific quantum correlations of the system's state, and study its intimate links to the state's entanglement structure. We identify the robust statistical signatures of such many-body quantum correlations in experimentally accessible - and scalable - marginal measurement distributions of the dynamically evolved quantum state. To do so, we apply the framework of partial distinguishability, i.e. a continuous notion of particle (in)distinguishability inscribed into unobserved degrees of freedom of the particles. This framework provides additional control parameters to systematically manipulate many-body coherence and entanglement properties, and to monitor their joint imprint in the dynamics, which manifests in an intricate superposition of interference processes at various orders. Applying both, analytical methods and data-driven algorithmic approaches, we resolve a given state's many-body coherence structure, quantify the partial distinguishability of its constituent particles, and characterise the system's multipartite entanglement properties. This toolbox ultimately enables us to disentangle the individual fingerprints of many-body interference and interactions, in a prototypical system of interacting quantum particles, in particular at the transition between regular and quantum chaotic dynamics

Over the last decade new experimental tools and theoretical concepts are providing new insights into collective nonequilibrium behavior of quantum systems. The exquisite control provided by laser trapping and cooling techniques allows us to observe the behavior of condensed bose and degenerate Fermi gases under nonequilibrium drive or after `quenches' in which a Hamiltonian parameter is suddenly or slowly changed. On the solid state front, high intensity short-time pulses and fast (femtosecond) probes allow solids to be put into highly excited states and probed before relaxation and dissipation occur. Experimental developments are matched by progress in theoretical techniques ranging from exact solutions of strongly interacting nonequilibrium models to new approaches to nonequilibrium numerics. The summer school `Strongly interacting quantum systems out of equilibrium' held at the Les Houches School of Physics as its XCIX session was designed to summarize this progress, lay out the open questions and define directions for future work. This books collects the lecture notes of the main courses given in this summer school.
