Excerpt from Puritan Theology, or Law, Grace, and Truth, Vol. 1 of 2: Being Discourses Polemical, Practical, and Historical; With a Prefatory Letter to the Rev. Robert Elder, D. D Witness newspaper was at my service whenever I chose to avail myself of it; but his too early and tragical death so saddened me that I have almost never penned a line, except a few critical notices, for the Witness or for any other journal since Hugh Miller's decease. Excerpt from Puritan Theology, Vol. 2 of 2: Or, Law, Grace, and Truth, Being Discourses Polemical, Practical, and Historical The only remark of a prefatory kind that I have to make respect ing the contents of this second volume is, that they were not designed to form a separate volume. But the first volume grew so' much in my hands while the printers were at work, that it became necessary to divide the work, not only into two parts, but into two volumes. The Sermons and Discourses in this volume, although taken very much at random from the manuscripts in my desk, arrange themselves in a not unnatural series. The first is designed to indicate a threefold aspect Of the Chris tian or Spiritual life in knowledge, love, and practical duty. The second indicates the relation of Christ and his people to the Law and the Prophets. And the third treats of the law Of Christian Discipleship or Self-denial, the daily Cross, and the following of Christ. In the fourth sermon several causes of spiritual declension are enumerated, and the sixth exhibits the efficacy of faith in the transforming of the soul into the image or likeness of Christ. The fifth is a fragment inserted to suit the printer's arrangements. The sermon on The Beauty, Shadow, and Fruit Of Christ, is designed to present Christ in certain aspects of his manifold glory, so that looking to Him we may rest in Him and in His love. The text is from the Beulah-land of Holy Scripture - the Song of Songs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Few teachings of the Puritans have provoked such strong reactions and conflicting interpretations as their views on preparing for saving faith. Many twentieth-century scholars dismissed preparation as a prime example of regression from the Reformed doctrine of grace for a man-centered legalism. In Prepared by Grace, for Grace , Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley make careful analysis of the Puritan understanding of preparatory grace, demonstrate its fundamental continuity with the Reformed tradition, and identify matters where even the Puritans disagreed among themselves. Clearing away the many misconceptions and associated accusations of preparationism, this study is sure to be the standard work on how the Puritans understood the ordinary way God leads sinners to Christ. Table of Contents: Introduction: The Question of Preparationism 1. Preparation and Modern Scholarship 2. Precedents to Puritan Preparation: Augustine to Calvin 3.
