Excerpt from Progress of the Beet-Sugar Industry in the United States in 1908 In my twelfth annual report on the Progress of the beet-sugar Industry I am not able to report as great a production of sugar as in 1907. There are, however, many things to indicate the industry's stability. Considering the whole country, climatic conditions have not been normal. Unfavorable weather occurred during the planting season in nearly all the different beet-growing areas. In some places there were excessive rains; in others the weather was too cold or too dry. In most of the States, Colorado particularly excepted, fairly favor able weather conditions existed during the growing season. There would, however, have been a larger planted and harvested area throughout the United States had it not been for the unfavorable weather conditions of the planting period. In' many places the yield and quality of beets were good. The total output of beets and sugar was reduced on account of the smaller area planted.
