Profiles of Saints presents a unique series of essays by the philosopher and Stigmatine priest, Cornelio Fabro, that follow from his observation that the common element in the lives of all saints is "the luminous thread of divine grace that is powerful in weakness." Drawing from the lives of ten very different saints, these “sketches” highlight that aspect of holiness proper to each saint by furnishing the reader with an insight often lacking in summaries of the lives of the saints: a genuine understanding of the essential humanity of the saints and of the real transformative power of God's mercy and grace. In this sensitive and refreshing treatment of the saints as real people whose lives were never free from human weakness, failure, and struggle, Fabro reveals his own profound spirituality, deeply rooted in the mystery of redemptive suffering. May this volume serve to inspire all authentic Christians to strive for a life of sanctity and foster devotion to the saints, whose very glory was their willingness to allow their lives to be illumined by grace.

Though medieval "saints' lives" are among the oldest literary texts of Western vernacular culture, they are routinely patronized as "pious fiction" by modern historiography. This book demonstrates that to characterize the genre as fiction is to misunderstand the intentions of medieval authors, who were neither credulous fools nor men blinded by piety. Concentrating on English texts, Heffernan reconstructs the medieval perspective and considers sacred biography in relation to the community for which it was written; identifies the genre's rhetorical practices and purposes; and demonstrates the syncretistic way in which the life of the medieval saint was transformed from oral tales to sacred text. In the process, Heffernan not only achieves a more contextually accurate understanding of the medieval saints' lives, but details a new critical method that has important implications for the practice of textual criticism.

“Martin’s final word is as Jungian as it is Catholic: God does not want us to be Mother Teresa or Dorothy Day. God wants us to be most fully ourselves.” —Washington Post Book World WITTY, WRYLY HONEST, AND ALWAYS ORIGINAL, My Life with the Saints is James Martin’s story of how his life has been shaped by some surprising friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. In his modern classic memoir, Martin introduces us to saints throughout history—from St. Peter to Dorothy Day, St. Francis of Assisi to Mother Teresa—and chronicles his lifelong friendships with them. Filled with fascinating tales, Martin’s funny, vibrant, and stirring book invites readers to discover how saints guide us throughout our earthly journeys and how they help each of us find holiness in our own lives.
