This book analyses the determining factors behind productivity and innovation amongst Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore, and within the context of South East Asia, in order to offer recommendations for increasing productivity and aiding economic growth. SME firms are an influential driver of economic growth in advanced world economies like the USA, Germany, Japan and South Korea. Throughout the 2000s, Singapore experienced a decline in economic growth which was linked to decreasing productivity in its SMEs. The decline triggered a transformational policy by a Government intent on forging a ‘high skill–high productivity’ future. Given substantial evidence that low productivity growth occurred in sectors where immigrants dominated the workforce, the seeds of recovery focused on improving productivity and innovation amongst SMEs in those sectors. Hence, this book investigates the factors determining productivity amongst SMEs across the manufacturing sector. It utilises personal interviews with global experts and CEOs, combined with primary data collected from a major international Delphi survey, and interviews with 215 SME owners and managers in Singapore. This data helps us to better understand how these productivity-enhancing factors can be used to increase performance amongst SMEs. By investigating the nature and process of total factor productivity in Singapore’s SMEs, this book tells the policy story behind the revolution. To provide a comparative analysis, Singapore’s story is placed within a South East Asian context. The unfolding narrative contains important lessons for policy makers and industry globally, as they assess the strategic choices available to them for improving productivity and innovation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of innovation and productivity, as well as economic development officers, government policy advisors, SME business managers and sustainable businesses.

ISO was found most significant measure as it had appreciably affected all the parameters except inventory level of finished goods, R&D activity, lead time of R&D, total production cost, cost due to customer complaints and cost due to rework. Quality Circles was found the second most important measure as it had significant impact on inventory levels of raw materials, R&D activity, lead time of R&D, total production cost, cost due to customer complaints, cost due to rework/re-inspection, and performance of the suppliers. 5S, suggestion schemes and workers participation were found least significant measures as these measures had affected only a few parameters. JIT was found the most insignificant measures. This is because of unstable demand, lack of proper training of employees to implement JIT. Moreover the small firms are owner managed and they try to implement the measures within their own constraints and not according to the requirement of the measures The firms, which have implemented multiple productivity improvement measures, had performed better than those having single measure. Productivity is a measure of performance in the industry, organization or factory. The project is focused on bread production line in a factory of Mama Bake Industry. The study is about improving production productivity, reducing the waiting time in production, increase the production in one day in order to achieve target in shorter time. Initially, collection data in terms of cycle times of each machine or workstations, the area require by the workstations. During the visit to the factory, observation period is about a day, the tools used to record time and measure distance, area required by each workstation, and area of the factory is done by using Smart Phone Atrix 2 with stopwatch and smart measure which have the function to measure the distance of the object to the user. After data are collected, following by using Witness software, the original plant layout model is created, then 4 other new layout model is created and simulate all of them together with the original layout, then the productivity and the efficiency of the layout is calculated and record in the result. From the study, the main problem found is the space are small, some process stuck due to not enough capacity in buffer provide, where the bottleneck occur, but removing the walls, and balanced the production line more buffer capacity can be provided, thus the process can proceed without delay and waiting. Among all new layouts being proposed and simulated in Witness Software, the one with higher improvement in productivity and plant layout efficiency will be chosen.
