The big round sun looked down at them and smiled his brightest smile. "Where are you going to build a nest?" asked the little larks. "Follow me," said Mother Lark. Then she flew to a bush beside the brook. "We do not need a nest now," she said. "You are all big enough to sleep in the bushes. "It is always cool in the bushes. "The wind will rock you to sleep every night." "What shall we do all day, when you are away hunting for food?" asked the littlest lark. "I shall not like to sit still on this branch for hours and hours." "I am going to teach you to hunt for yourselves now," said Mother Lark. "You will have no time to sit still on this branch." "Oh, what fun!" cried the larks, and they clapped their wings together. The littlest lark clapped his wings so hard that he fell off the bush on to the soft grass. It did not hurt him, but he was a wee bit frightened to find himself alone. He looked all around and began to call for his mother. But he was not alone, after all. Just beside him he saw something that looked like a soft furry ball. It was not a ball. It was Bunny Rabbit, and he began to unroll himself and shake his ears. Then he opened one sleepy eye and looked at the little lark. "Where did you come from?" he asked. "I came from that bush over your head," answered the littlest lark. "I just clapped my wings, and down I came on the grass." "What are you doing in my meadow?" asked Bunny Rabbit. "Is this your meadow?" chirped the littlest lark.
