Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis has been utilized by the aircraft industry to characterize the distribution of ventilation air in conventionally-configured commercial aircraft passenger cabins. The recent tendency is to increase recirculated air proportion, for operating efficiency. There are also emergent many new cabin interior designs with appurtenances. A principle consideration is assessment of cabin air quality, and comfort, for the aircraft Environmental Control System (ECS) operating in cruise mode at flight altitude, where the efficiency issue is of primary impact. This paper addresses the application potential of CFD to assist in determination, perhaps optimization, of a quality cabin interior environment for broad ranging cabin configuration variations.

Civil transport aircraft have clearly been demonstrated as a preferred target of terrorist organizations through the years. The threat of the release of a noxious chemical or biological agent into the passenger cabin is real. Protection of occupants is critical for maintaining public confidence in air travel. Therefore, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) is directing a project for quantitative evaluation of the distribution of contaminants released during mid-flight in commercial airliner passenger cabins. The effort uses the CAMI 747 Aircraft Environmental Research Facility (AERF) to collect airflow data to be used to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) algorithms that can predict the potential distribution of a variety of particles in the aircraft. The cabin velocity vector field is measured at a number of points within the cabin using 3-dimensional sonic and conventional hot-wire anemometers. These data serve as a comparison basis to simulation via CFD that predicts the 3-dimensional ventilation flow field. This paper presents the first results of validation of CFD prediction of the cabin flow field in a segment of a 747 AERF. Agreement between the data and the simulation is good, hence represents the first steps towards development of a CFD system to quantitatively study contaminant distribution and assist in testing optimal responses to an attack on various airframes. The release of a chemical weapon has been the focus of work to date, but CFD is ultimately applicable to predicting the distribution of other entities through the aircraft environmental control system (ECS) such as biological, nuclear, or other toxic agents. Concurrently, the approach is applicable to generic cabin air quality issues where an understanding of flow fields is of critical importance in terms of the role that fresh air and.

There are many sources of emissions produced by burning fuel for power or heat, through chemical reactions, and from leaks from industrial processes or equipment. There is always a possibility of a potential hazard when these gases enter into the indoor environment with the air flow. The determination of the concentration profiles are necessary to evaluate the potential hazard posed by the gas spread. The main objectives of this work are to develop an appropriate measurement methodology and a 3D CFD transient multicomponent simulation model for the determination of spatial and temporal distribution of gaseous emissions with the air flow in the indoor environment. This work is also aimed at comparing the numerical simulation results of different CFD programs for a 2D base case model of indoor air flow with and without emission source under laminar and turbulent flow conditions for the purpose of developing a better basic understanding of the physical phenomena and for the selection of the suitable and appropriate CFD program for the further development of the simulation model. One of the goals is also to apply the developed simulation model to the loss prevention and risk mitigation in the indoor environment and to study the influence of different parameters on the concentration distribution of gaseous pollutants in the presence of air flow in the indoor environment to minimize the expensive and time consuming experimentation efforts.

The inverse design approach is new to the built environment research and design community, though it has been used in other industries including automobile and airplane design. This book, from some of the pioneers of inverse design applications in the built environment, introduces the basic principles of inverse design and the specific techniques that can be applied to built environment systems. The authors' inverse design concept uses the desired enclosed environment as the design objective and inversely determines the systems required to achieve the objective. The book discusses a number of backward and forward methods for inverse design. Backward methods, such as the quasi-reversibility method, the pseudo-reversibility method, and the regularized inverse matrix method, can be used to identify contaminant sources in an enclosed environment. However, these methods cannot be used to inversely design a desired indoor environment. Forward methods, such as the computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD)-based genetic algorithm (GA) method, the CFD-based adjoint method, the CFD-based artificial neural network (ANN) method, and the CFD-based proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method, show the promise in the inverse design of airflow and heat transfer in an enclosed environment.
