Power quality is very important issue recently due to the impact on electricity suppliers, equipment manufacture and customers. Power quality is described as the variation of voltage, current and frequency in a power system. Nowadays, there are so many industries using high technology for manufacturing and process unit. This technology requires high quality and high reliability of power supply. Power Quality problems encompass a wide range of disturbances such as voltage sags/swells, flicker, harmonics distortion, impulse transient, and interruptions. Voltage sags is the most common type of power quality disturbance in the distribution system. It can be caused by fault in the electrical network or by the starting of a large induction motor. Voltage sags are a remarkable source of economic losses. The purpose of this book is tried to analyze and identify voltage sags problem in power quality especially in a distribution system. The simulation will be using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The mitigation techniques that will be studied are such as Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR), Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) and Solid State Transfer Switch (SSTS).

In recent years, sensitive industrial and critical commercial loads have been increasing amount of focus on power quality due to various types of power quality (PQ) problems. To overcome such problems, utility companies have made efforts to improve the quality and reliability of their electric power to the consumers. Traditionally for problems originated on the utility side, the approach has been to work on the customer side to desensitize critical loads while cleaning up the circuit on the utility side. However, with the development of high power semiconductor devices, it has become possible to design various custom power devices which can provide credible solutions to power quality problems on the distribution networks. This book explained the modelling and simulations of custom power devices, namely, the distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM), dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), solid-state transfer switch (SSTS) and solid-state fault current limiter (SSFCL). New control schemes have been implemented to evaluate the performance of these custom power devices in mitigating PQ problems. The developed simulation models will be useful for further PQ studies in a distribution system.

Both deregulation in the electrical supply industry and the creation of new electricity markets present electric utility companies with the challenge of becoming more efficient without compromising quality of service. Providing new solutions for this newly deregulated paradigm, Power Quality: VAR Compensation in Power Systems presents comprehensive coverage of power quality, harmonics, and static var compensators in one single volume. The book explains how to ensure that power quality is not affected by the harmonics generated by power electronic equipment and explains how to reduce labor costs and increase reliability of supply by employing a single pole autoreclosing scheme. It also addresses how to analyze frequency response of current transformers and voltage transformers while measuring harmonics. Based on the authors’ extensive experience in the electric supply industry, Power Quality enables engineers to meet the demands of increased loads, strengthen their transmission systems, and ensure reliable electric supply.
