Excerpt from Posthumous and Other Poems The poems contained in this volume were written by the Author at various periods of her life, between the years 1817 and 1845. Some of them have already appeared in print in periodical and other publications; the greater number, however, are strictly Posthumous, and appear before the public for the first time. They were written in moments of leisure and relaxation, and so little importance was attached to them, that in few instances were copies retained; they were often not even transcribed, the original manuscript being sent to the friends for whom they were written. The Editor takes this opportunity of returning his thanks to the possessors of these poems, for their great kindness in sending them to him for publication; he believes that many more exist, and begs to repeat his request that they may be forwarded to him, to the care of Messrs. Seeley, Bumside, and Seeley, as this volume will probably be followed by a second series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After Shelley's death in the Gulf of Spezia in July 1822 Mary Shelley (then aged 25) stayed on in Italy for a year before returning to London with her son Percy. Posthumous poems, edited from manuscript, was the initial step in the work of publicizing Shelley's poetry that was to occupy her for the next fifteen years. It contains the first publication of much of the work of the last period of his life, including Julian and Maddalo (the philosophical Shelley/Byron eclogue) and his last poem, The triumph of life. It also includes many short pieces (often expressions of his fraught emotional life) and translations of classical and modern literature. In publishing his own poetry Shelley had tended to print major works, either on their own, or supported by lesser poems; Posthumous poems takes a more comprehensive view. Readers could begin to gauge the true range and value of his work. Sir Timothy Shelley intervened, however; Posthumous poems was suppressed. Of the 500 copies printed, 191 were destroyed.

Excerpt from Gossamer and Snowdrift: The Posthumous Poems The name of Charles Mackay is so well known in England and America, and his fame as a poet is so firmly established, that it is scarcely necessary for me to go into the matter at any length. His poetry has the vital glow; his songs are marked for immortality. They have the glamour of truth about them. And what says Emerson? "He who writes to his own heart writes to an eternal public." Such was eminently the case with Charles Mackay, - the People's Poet, as he is fondly called by hundreds of thousands, - one who loved nature and human nature, and wrote of both in clear, outspoken tones, - a lark singing in the dawn of a new day, and having at heart the welfare of humanity.
