Studies in Poetry and Philosophy by John Campbell Shairp is a rare gem that contextualizes the work of famous poets like Wordsworth, Coleridge and Keble in philosophy. Shairp establishes in the beginning itself that this title is not intended to place these stalwarts in the annals of literary greatness. It is an attempt to understand the psyche, individual thought processes and life experiences of these great poets. And with this understanding, Shairp is able to link their philosophies in life to the poetry they wrote. Studies in Poetry and Philosophy contains four essays of which three are based on these poets while the last one revolves around a more abstract question about the moving force of moral life. Each essay starts with a brief biography of all each poet. Shairp is able to bring out the linkages between Christianity and the religious beliefs of these men. The most striking notion established by the author throughout this work is the interplay of continuity and change which these poets grapple with in their lives. Each essay has a generous sprinkling of couplets and quotations from the many works of these esteemed poets. The essay on Wordsworth is especially worth mentioning, as the author is able to deconstruct the complex ideas and phrases used in his poetry to show Wordsworth's appreciation of nature as a living, breathing power rather than an assimilation of the dull and boring as some of his contemporaries saw it. If not for the observations of the author on the synergy between philosophy and poetry, Studies in Poetry and Philosophy is an excellent read for knowing more about these poets - interesting facts and trivia that the reader, whether casual or students of literature and philosophy, may not be able to find in other volumes. The latest edition of Rhetoric and Human Consciousness remains a well-researched, accessible examination of rhetorical theory in Western civilization. Smiths coverage of the major figures who advanced rhetoric is strengthened by his keen analysis of developments in rhetorical theory that resulted from its interaction with other disciplines and the cultures surrounding it. The dialectic between rhetoric and other disciplines (notably philosophy and psychology) illuminate evolving definitions of rhetoric, from myth and display to persuasion and symbolic inducement. Well-chosen, engaging examples demonstrate how rhetoric can find truths, particularly at times when science and reason fail to solve important human crises. Paramount to this well-wrought survey is Smiths ability to show that rhetorical criticism illustrates, verifies, and refines rhetor-ical theory. Thus, the synergistic relationship between theory and criticism in rhetoric is no different than in other arts. Chief among the Fourth Editions enhancements are expanded discussions of the historical context for the creation of rhetorical theory and its use in public address; additional coverage of Isocrates, Cicero, Machiavelli, Kenneth Burke, and Michel Foucault; new material on the rhetoric of civil religion, ideological criticism, constitutive discourse, and feminist rhetorical theory; and many fresh examples. Each chapter ends with questions that sharpen readers retention of concepts and the ability to apply those to everyday life.

Consensus holds that Lucretius admired the literary prestige of Homeric epos, the form that Ennius famously introduced to Latin literature. However, some hold that Lucretius disagreed with Ennius' quasi-Pythagorean claim to be Homer reborn, and so uniquely qualified to adapt Homeric poetry to the Latin language. Likewise, received wisdom holds that Lucretius followed in the path of poets writing in the wake of Ennius' Annales, most of whom employed an Ennian style. However, throughout the De Rerum Natura, Lucretius' use of Ennius' Annales as a formal model for a long discursive poem in epic meter was neither inevitable nor predictable, on the one hand, nor meaningful in the simple way that critical consensus has always maintained. Jason Nethercut posits that Lucretius selected Ennius as a model precisely to dismantle the values for which he claimed Ennius stood, including the importance of history as a poetic subject and Rome's historical achievement in particular. As the first book to offer substantial analysis of the relationship between two of the ancient world's most impactful poets, Ennius Noster: Lucretius and the Annales fills an important gap not only in Lucretian scholarship, but also in our understanding of Latin literary history.

Jane Austen is a favorite with many students, whether they've read her novels or viewed popular film adaptations. But Persuasion, completed at the end of her life, can be challenging for students to approach. They are surprised to meet a heroine so subdued and self-sacrificing, and the novel's setting during the Napoleonic wars may be unfamiliar. This volume provides teachers with avenues to explore the depths and richness of the novel with both Austen fans and newcomers. Part 1, "Materials," suggests editions for classroom use, criticism, and multimedia resources. Part 2, "Approaches," presents strategies for teaching the literary, contextual, and philosophical dimensions of the novel. Essays address topics such as free indirect discourse and other narrative techniques; social class in Austen's England; the role of the navy during war and peacetime; key locations in the novel, including Lyme Regis and Bath; and health, illness, and the ethics of care.
