Excerpt from Translations Translating does not, for him, differ in essence from any other poetic job; as the poet begins by seeing, so the translator by reading; but his reading must be a kind of seeing. Hence the miraculous accomplishment of Pound's translations sitting down before a text, he doesn't chafe at restrictions unusual to his lyric practice. A good translation seems like a miracle because one who can read the original can, so to speak, see the poem before the poet writes it, and marvel at the success of his wrestle to subdue his own language to the vision; but Pound has always written as if to meet a test of this kind, in a spirit of utter fidelity to his material, whether a document or an intuition. He has told of working six months to fix a complex instantaneous emotion in fourteen words. Translation is indeed for Pound somewhat easier than what is called 'original composition'; those six months were spent less on finding the words than in bringing the emotion into focus, and a text to be translated, once grasped, doesn't wobble. The technical difficulty is comparable, but the emotional discipline, if no less exacting, less exhausting. Pound has for this reason recommended translation as an exercise to young poets plagued by the tendency of what they are trying to express to undergo expedient transformations. Excerpt from Poems, Original and Translations Those who know me only in my philosophical andscientific writing will feel some surprise to find me in the role of poetry. While I was very fond of it in my childhood and read much of it I never ventured on writing or translating any of it until I was far past fifty. I remembered that Darwin lost his love of poetry from the influence of his scientific studies, and one motive, perhaps the chief one, in publishing this little volume is to give testimony to the fact that science may not always destroy the poetic sense. Darwin lost his faith from the materialistic tendencies of histheories, and with ithe lost the love for poetry which goes with some sort of faith. I, too, lost mine, but had it restored by deeper draughts from the source which had first deprived me of it. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, Drink deep, or touch not the Pierian spring. But whatever the influence, age and scientific studies have not dimmed at last the passion for that literature which has cheered or soothed the race from the time of Homer and Sappho. The original poems, both in English and German, required a special mood to suggest and create them. This mood was not and is not always at my command. Excerpt from Original Poems With Translations From Scandinavian and Other Poets Of the Translations, some are of poems already rendered into English, and well known. But my object has been to gather into one volume such specimens of the Poetry of the North and South, translated by myself, as might show those differences which spring from diversity of race, temperament, and climate, and yet exhibit that unfailing bond of brotherhood, whereby the Poet-heart every where recognizes truth, and love, and the beautiful, and a higher life than ours is here. Excerpt from Foliage or Poems Original and Translated Tun downfall of the French school of poetry has of late been encreasing in rapidity; it's cold and artificial compositions have given way, like so many fantastic figures of snow; and imagination breathes again in a more green and genial time. An attachment to the school undoubtedly survives in some quarters; but those who defend it 'as a superior one of poetry, merely shew that they have no real. Excerpt from Verse Translations From Classic Authors It is an instructive fact that the French word "traduire," "to translate," is derived from "traducere," a word which has as a secondary meaning "to ridicule" or "misrepresent," while the English form, "traduce," has a still uglier signification. To translate must always be to traduce to a greater or less degree; either spirit or letter must be more or less lost in the process, even in the most perfect translation. Every language possesses its own metaphors, idioms, turns of expression, and modes of thought; every language has its own constructions, syntax, metrical system; and the successful transference of a thought from one language to another depends on the skill of the translator in deciding whether he may employ the same metaphor, metre, or what not, or must cast about for a corresponding or similar one which shall produce the same effect. Perhaps these remarks may best be illustrated by mentioning a perfect example of what a translation ought not to be. Nothing will suit our purpose better than Miltons famous "traduction" of Horace's Ode to Pyrrha. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from English and Latin Poems: Original and Translated To the three or four last years of his school education he was accustomed to look back as to the most important period of his life. And to him it was really so for although the know ledge acquired at that early age may generally be less important, as preparatory only to things more needful for the business of life, to him it was rendered all in all by a coming event most sad and unforeseen.
