Phosphorus-Nitrogen Compounds: Cyclic, Linear, and High Polymeric Systems concerns itself with the chemistry of compounds containing alternating phosphorus - nitrogen atoms in the skeleton. The monograph aims to be an introduction to phosphorus-nitrogen chemistry, a review of advances in the field, and reference work. The text is divided into three parts. Part I covers the introduction, historical background, and nomenclature of phosphorus-nitrogen compounds and the theories in bonding and structure of phosphazenes and phosphazanes. Part II deals with reactions such as the synthesis of the phosphorus-nitrogen skeleton, hydrolysis of phosphazenes and phosphazanes, and the aminolysis of halophosphazenes. Part III discusses polymer chemistry and includes topics such as polymerization, depolymerization, and phosphazene polymers. The book is recommended for students and practitioners in the field of chemistry, especially those concerned with phosphorus nitrogen compounds and polymeric systems.

The main aim of this book is to provide a complete picture of current research on phosphazene compounds carried out around the world. The book opens with a general introduction, then moves on to cover synthetic aspects of phosphazene polymers, their characterization in solution and from the theoretical, thermal, and mechanical points of view; application aspects of poly(organophosphazenes); and the synthesis, characterization, and practical utilization of cyclophosphazenes. There is particular focus on the use of cyclophosphazenes as hydraulic fluids and additives, as cores for star polymers or dendrimers, and as starting substrates for supramolecular chemistry and nanostructured materials. The spectroscopic characterization of these compounds by NMR and Raman techniques is also discussed. Annotation : 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

Polymers are important and attractive biomaterials for researchers and clinical applications due to the ease of tailoring their chemical, physical and biological properties for target devices. Due to this versatility they are rapidly replacing other classes of biomaterials such as ceramics or metals. As a result, the demand for biomedical polymers has grown exponentially and supports a diverse and highly monetized research community. Currently worth $1.2bn in 2009 (up from $650m in 2000), biomedical polymers are expected to achieve a CAGR of 9.8% until 2015, supporting a current research community of approximately 28,000+. Summarizing the main advances in biopolymer development of the last decades, this work systematically covers both the physical science and biomedical engineering of the multidisciplinary field. Coverage extends across synthesis, characterization, design consideration and biomedical applications. The work supports scientists researching the formulation of novel polymers with desirable physical, chemical, biological, biomechanical and degradation properties for specific targeted biomedical applications. Combines chemistry, biology and engineering for expert and appropriate integration of design and engineering of polymeric biomaterials Physical, chemical, biological, biomechanical and degradation properties alongside currently deployed clinical applications of specific biomaterials aids use as single source reference on field. 15+ case studies provides in-depth analysis of currently used polymeric biomaterials, aiding design considerations for the future

The chemistry of P-N compounds is characterized by the existence of polymeric compounds. Many derivatives of the six membered ring system (NPCl(sub2)) and of the eight membered system (NPCl(sub 2))(sub 4) are known Therefore, the reaction of PCl(sub 5) with NH(sub 4)Cl has been studied The intermediates of this reaction could be isolated. In the re port a short review of useful substances derived from the trimeric and the polymeric phospho-nitrilic chlorides is given. There are also four membered P-N ring compounds. These four membered ring systems their preparation and their properties e.g. their structure, are described. Polymeric substances containing such a four membered ring system are formed with aromatic dihydroxy compounds and also with Cr(CO)(sub 6). Some four membered ring systems may be condensated. A compound with 3 four membered P-N ring systems was formed, in which the 3 ring systems are connected by a P-Cl bridge. There are also such ring systems in which 1 or more phosphorus atoms are substituted by S02 groups. Special attempts have been made to synthesize thermostable and flame resistant materials on the basis of P-N-C compounds. Therefore the reaction of guanidine and PCl(sub 5) was studied Other compounds were prepared by the reaction of PCl(sub 5) with cyanamide and with dicyandiamide, e.g. phosphatriazines could be prepared. New hetero cycles with four and five membered P-N ring systems were obtained by the reaction of oxamide and PCl Such ring systems can be connected with each other. Finally a very promissing product was obtained by the reaction of PCl and Liquid ammonia.

The present volume considers the most recent developments in the chemistry of cyclic inorganic and organoelement compounds. Nineteen of the 22 chapters are based on invited and other lectures presented at the 6th International Symposium on Inorganic Ring Systems held in Berlin on August 18-22, 1991. Main group compounds dominate the content from boron via carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, nitrogen, phosphorus and arsenic, to sulfur and selenium. The book is organized by element, moving from left to right in the main groups of the Periodic Table, followed by one chapter each on bonding and nomenclature of ring molecules. The list of contributors comprises distinguished scientists from 8 countries.
