The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998.The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.

Libya has the largest petroleum reserves of any country in Africa and since production began in 1961 over 20 billion barrels of oil have been produced. Libya is scheduled to reach the mid-point of depletion of reserves in 2001 and this provides a timely point at which to review the state of petroleum exploration in Libya. A large amount of data has been published on the geology of Libya, but it is scattered through the literature; much of the older data has been superceded, and several of the key publications, especially those published in Libya, are difficult to find. This book represents the first attempt to produce a comprehensive synthesis of the petroleum geology of Libya. It is based exclusively on published data, supplemented by the author's experience gained during ten years work in Libya. The aim of the book is to systematically review the plate tectonics, structural evolution, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and petroleum systems of Libya, and provides valuable new data on fields, production, and reserves. This volume will provide a ready source of reference to individuals and companies who wish to obtain an overview of the petroleum geology of Libya, and will save them the laborious task of sifting through hundreds of publications to find the data they require. The book includes 148 newly drawn figures.

The Murzuq Basin is a sedimentary basin located SW Libya which geology remains poorly understood in spite that their proved reserves has been estimated up to 6000 12b and a number of finds have been recently reported. The Murzuq reserves represent about 6.5 % of the Libyan resources and the larger reserves are located in the NC115, NC174 NC186 and NC210 blocks. Production in the basin began in late 1996 when the El Sharara Field comes on stream. El Sharara Field is capable to produce up to 200,000 B/D, and Al Feel Field is capable to produce up to 150,000 B/D. About the 30% of the Libya's current oil production is supplied by the Murzuq Basin. Geologically the Murzuq Basin is an erosional remnant of a much larger Palaeozoic continental margin rimming Gondwana. The present-day flanks of the basin are defined by erosion resulting from multiphase tectonic uplifts; consequently the current basin geometry has not relation to the broad and large peri-Gondwana continental margin which existed in the area during Palaeozoic times. The Murzuq flanks comprise the Tihemboka, Tibesti, Gargaf and Atshan highs. The Murzuq Basin is filled by a thick Palaeozoic sedimentary succession of marine and transitional sediments. In general sedimentation rate during Palaeozoic times was low and their maximum sedimentary infill reaches about 3000 metres in thickness. The sedimentary infill of the basin records several generations of structuring, mainly compressional and transpressional in nature, but the cumulative structural deformation is considered relatively minor. Although fault arrangement displays considerably variations, a N-S trend is dominant. The Palaeozoic sedimentary infill of the Murzuq Basin is divided in fifteen lithostratigraphic units called from older to younger: Hasawnah, Achabiyat, Hawaz, Melaz Suqran, Mamuniyat, Bir Tlacsin, Tanezzuft, Akakus, Tadrart, Wan Kasa, Awainat Wanin, Marar, Assedjefar, Dembaba and Tiguentounine formations. The older Hasawnah Fm records an initial marine transgression during late Cambrian to middle Ordovician times and the younger Tiguentounine Fm records deposition during the late Carboniferous to lowermost Permian times. Generally Permian rocks are missing in the Murzuq Basin because during this period the main phase of Hercynian uplift and erosion took place and most of the Permian strata were removed. A number of major basin-scale unconformities are recognized within the sedimentary infill recording the orogenic history and other major geological processes occurred in the Murzuq Basin which, in turn, controlled deposition. These basin-scale unconformities allow us the stratigraphic subdivision of the Palaeozoic sedimentary record into four second order sequences. The main basin-scale unconformities are the Pan-African, Taconian, Caledonian and Hercynian tectonic phases and the Late Ordovician glaciation. Other unconformities which could be recognized within the sedimentary record are minor or belong to the younger Austrian and Alpine cycles, and consequently, they don't affect the deposition of the Palaeozoic sequences. Two Palaeozoic petroleum systems have been identified within the Murzuq Basin. Both involving the early Silurian Hot Shale source: a) A late Ordovician petroleum system composed of the Hawaz/Mamuniyat sandstones reservoir, the Hot Shale source and the Tanezzuft seal, and b) A middle Devonian petroleum system composed of the BDS sandstones reservoir, the Hot Shale source and intra Devonian shales seal. In the late Ordovician petroleum system oil was expelled from the Hot Shales directly into the underlying Hawaz and Mamuniyat sandstones, which contain all the commercial discoveries in the Murzuq Basin. So, oil migration was short and reservoir recharge laterally. Results of basin modelling suggest timing of petroleum generation and trapping from late Carboniferous to Cretaceous or even early Tertiary. This system is the primary play in all the commercial oil discoveries in the northern and central part of the Murzuq Basin and their resources in the Murzuq Basin are estimated more than 2000 12STB. The Devonian system is a secondary potential petroleum system constituted by the Middle Devonian BDS sandstones reservoir charged indiscriminately by both, Devonian or Silurian organic-rich shales and sealed by intra Devonian shaly intervals. The possible existence of the Devonian system is supported by the discovery of some non commercial oil accumulations and the presence of frequent oil shows in the BDS interval. However, to date commercial finds has been not recorded within the Devonian system and their hydrocarbon potential remains poorly understood.

Worldwide, Neoproterozoic successions are major hydrocarbon producers. In North Africa, large basins with significant surface outcrops and thick sedimen-tary fills are widespread. These basins are now emerging as potential sources of hydrocarbons and are attracting interest both from geological researchers and the oil and gas industry. This volume focuses on recent developments in the understanding and correla-tion of North African basin fills and explores novel approaches to prospecting for source and reservoir rocks. The papers cover aspects of petroleum prospectivity and age-equivalent global petroleum systems, Neoproterozoic tectonics and pa-laeogeography, sequence stratigraphy, glacial events and global climatic models, faunal and floral evolution and the deposition of early source rocks. The broader aim is to compare with, and learn from, well-studied Neoproterozoic successions globally, including major environmental change, the emergence of life, the global carbon cycle and implications for hydrocarbon exploration.

This richly illustrated book offers a concise overview of the geology of Egypt in the context of the geology of the Arab Region and Northeast Africa. An introductory chapter on history of geological research in Egypt sheds much light on the stages before and after the establishment of Egyptian Geological Survey (the second oldest geological survey worldwide), Hume's book and Said's 1962, 1990 books. The book starts with the Precambrian geology of Egypt, in terms of lithostratigraphy and classifications, structural and tectonic framework, crustal evolution and metamorphic belts. A dedicated chapter discusses the Paleozoic-Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonics and structural evolution of Egypt. A chapter highlights the Red Sea tectonics and the Gulf of Suez and Gulf of Aqaba Rifts. Subsequent chapters address the Phanerozoic geology from Paleozoic to Quaternary. The Egyptian Impact Crater(s) and Meteorites are dealt with in a separate chapter. The Earth resources in Egypt, including metallic and non-metallic ore deposits, hydrocarbon and water resources, are given much more attention throughout four chapters. The last chapter addresses the seismicity, seismotectonics and neotectonics of Egypt.
