Max Prey, a former Chicago police detective, resigned his position and became the police chief of a small Wisconsin town to be near his wife's family. A year after her passing, he yearned to return to his former life, when a grisly murder rocked the town. When the victim turned out to be the latest victim of a mass murderer, Max was offered the opportunity of being the lead investigator by the FBI.
