In 1904 a famous and legendary physician named Sir William Osler counseled doctors to “Live a simple and temperate life, that you may give all your powers to your profession. Medicine is a jealous mistress; she will be satisfied with no less.” Unlike this famous advice, most physicians do not live a simple life. The demands by patients, hospitals, communities, political groups, and others for a doctor’s time can be extraordinary. As a young boy Dr. Osler’s mistress seduced me, and I have had a lifelong affair with her. The book’s title, Paging Dr. A, relates to the many ways I was summoned or contacted over the years. A phone ringing, or a pager beeping, or a nurse having a hunch about a patient, or a sheriff coming to my home in the middle of the night all requested my help. I learned that someone waving at me in a crowd, a pat on my back, or a note written on a scrap of paper could also be asking for my assistance with a medical problem or to give a presentation to educate others. With time and experience, I learned that a person’s appearance and body language often communicated a better medical history than the spoken word. This retrospective presents more true stories about my journey through fifty years of medicine. Some stories have extended notes inserted into the text to give the reader clarity about certain topics. Some stories contain “Food For Thought” topics. Like the stories in my other books, Reflections of a Country Doctor, The Next Prescription, and Side Effects, some are silly, some are sad, some will make you happy, and some might make you mad. I hope you enjoy this portion of my life’s journey in medicine.

Excerpt from Stories of a Country Doctor "When a person knows a story that he thinks he ought to tell, If he doesn't get to tell it, why, of course, he don't feel well." - Eugene F. Ware. Every book must have a preface, and so, "yielding to an imperious custom," I write one for mine. The preface usually tells why the author wrote the book; - "there was a demand," "a crying need," "a long felt want," etc., etc. Now, I can scarcely tell why I wrote this book. There were many reasons that impelled me to the task. My friends urged me to write it - friends who had seen me, with my great capacity for enjoyment, gallantly wrestling with poverty year after year and generally getting thrown the "three best in five." They thought I had a fortune within my grasp if I would only put my ideas and my stories into a book. They desired that I should grow rich so that they could borrow my money. I desired to grow rich so that I could refuse them. I can't refuse them so long as I am poor. I found a niche ("a long felt want," you see, reader) which has never been filled by any writer, and so occupied it. I desired to give the world the benefit of what I had learned of humanity in a quarter of a century's practice. Have you ever had to decide what to do with an unidentified corpse by a Devonian cowshed when the herd is due in for milking? And how would you react if one of your patients was abducted by aliens? If you are a GP it seems these are routine matters. From coping with the suicide of a colleague to the unusual whereabouts of a jar of Coleman's mustard, this is the story of one rural doctor's often misguided attempts to make sense of the career in which he has unwittingly found himself. Dr Sparrow's adventures would be utterly unbelievable were they not 100% true stories. His bedside manner may sometimes leave a little to be desired but, if you're in dire straits, this doctor will have you in stitches.
