Paddington Station in London is one of Britains most splendid and historically significant railway termini, as the home and headquarters of the Great Western Railway, and as one of the masterpieces of its chief engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (180659). Steven Brindles comprehensive history, the first full-length study of the station to be published, first appeared in 2004. Around the same time, in the course of research for the book, the author discovered Brunels earliest surviving cast-iron bridge, which spanned the Regents Canal just outside the station but had hitherto been unrecognised, just in time to prevent its destruction for a major new road bridge and negotiate its salvage by dismantling. The second edition of the book, richly illustrated from a wealth of historic sources and now published in a larger format, has been updated to take account of a series of momentous recent developments at Paddington: the reprieve and restoration of the stations Edwardian fourth span; the project to create a new entrance on its north side; and the impending redevelopment of its south side to serve as one of the principal stations on the new Crossrail route across London. The book concludes with a detailed account of the project to rebuild the Bishops Road Bridge project and the authors discovery and salvage of Brunels iron canal bridge: a rare instance when writing the history of a historic place directly influenced its future, and led to the saving of a unique part of the past.

Download Duck on a Tractor Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Bestselling Caldecott Honor artist David Shannon tells the story of a determined duck who decides to jump on a tractor and drive it around the barnyard and through town, with hilarious consequences! Shannon's wildly popular, award-winning Duck on a Bike left children begging him to tell them another story about Duck after seeing him pictured alongside a shiny red tractor. Now Duck is back and turning the farm upside down! Flushed with the success of his trailblazing bike ride around the farm, Duck decides he's ready to drive the tractor. As in the bestselling Duck on a Bike, all the barnyard animals share their humorous comments as they watch Duck do the unthinkable. Then, one by one, they join him on the tractor for a ride! But what happens when Duck drives the big red tractor through town, past the popular diner where all the locals are having lunch? What will those folks really think when they see Duck and all the other animals riding around on Farmer O'Dell's tractor? Filled with entertaining detail and sly jokes, readers will pore over each picture again and again. Perfect for reading aloud!

Download The London of Sherlock Holmes Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
All serious Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts want to visit London to see the places mentioned in the Great Detective s adventures. The e-book version of See the London of Sherlock Holmes allows enthusiasts to -visit- London from their home computers, or internet connected TVs. This is achieved by hyperlinking the latitude & longitude addresses in the book to the -Street View- feature in Google Maps. The map coordinates are also GPS addresses for those who visit London with hand-held GPS devices. The book groups the 400+ Sherlock Holmes sites by the nearest underground or railway station. Entering GPS addresses after arriving at the station will generate turn-by-turn directions from one Sherlock Holmes site to another. Six walking tour maps are also included. These are not the usual rambling tours, but walks in Holmes and Watsons footsteps. Finally, for those with a statistical bent, the book lists 454 characters named in the book, and statistically analyzes their titles and occupations.
