Art lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike will be captivated by this stunning, full-colour biography that celebrates and showcases the life and work of an extraordinary man--artist Stewart Marshall. For much of the past two decades, Stewart Marshall has travelled hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles in a hand-built kayak, living off the land and the sea and painting on some of British Columbia's most remote shorelines. His unusual way of life has taken him to countless distant places, from the wilds of Quebec to the South Pacific. Marshall's art is sought after by discerning collectors across Canada and the U.S. Most of his work is purchased without ever reaching the gallery community. Born in Montreal, he now lives in the coastal village of Sointula, B.C. Painter, Paddler: The Art and Adventures of Stewart Marshall features Stewart Marshall's dramatic watercolour, acrylic, and oil paintings. It also includes sketches and drawings from his diaries, carried with him on his kayaking expeditions. In addition, Andrew Scott describes the artist's many adventures on the water, his experiences with wild animals and even wilder weather. This insightful portrayal captures the highs and lows of a lifetime of painting and paddling, especially on the Pacific coast of North America.

Described by his contemporaries as Daguerre's most dedicated follower, Thomas M. Easterly did most of his work in the relative obscurity of St. Louis. This lavishly illustrated account of his twenty-seven-year career established him as a new master in the ranks of nineteenth-century photographers. It will be an essential addition to the libraries of scholars and collectors. Easterly's subjects range far beyond the traditional daguerrean portrait. Of his surviving inventory of over 600 plates in the collection of the Missouri Historical Society, over 140 are views of St. Louis, his native New England, and the Niagara Falls region of New York. Three series of American Indian portraits constitute the earliest dated photographic record of Plains tribal members. A series of studio portraits of ordinary people and celebrities demonstrate a remarkable mastery of technique placing Easterly decades ahead of his time.

The prints and drawings of Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) include some of the world's best-known, most popular, and most valuable pieces. This volume is a catalog of van Gogh drawings and prints that are currently under the care of the Kröller-Müller Museum, located near the village of Otterlo in the Netherlands. Catalogued for the first time in 1917, these works have undergone four different editions of the cataloguing process by four different members of the museum staff since World War II alone, and always in the company of van Gogh's more famous paintings. Now, for the first time, the drawings have been studied independently, and the information gathered here presents a remarkably clear overview of the present scholarship and art historical research on the authenticity, dating, provenance, and exhibitions of the work. Differing in many ways from the last collection catalog of van Gogh's drawings and paintings (which was published nearly thirty years ago), this volume not only produces new information on the provenance of certain works, but frequently comes up with a sharper analysis of the techniques and materials used by the artist, as well as new dates for individual drawings. Doubts that have arisen about the authenticity of certain juvenilia by van Gogh are here provided with a well-reasoned foundation, and with the publication of this edition--which complements a 2003 catalog of van Gogh's paintings--a period of intensive research on van Gogh's works in the collection has been brought to a close, culminating in this impeccably researched catalog and its accompanying wealth of full-color images.
