Excerpt from Original Dramas, Dialogues, Declamations and Tableaux Vivans for School Exhibitions, May-Day Celebrations, and Parlor Amusement I remember seeing, some years ago, a book published by Dick Fitzgerald, New York, entitled The Sociable. In it is contained accurate descriptions for planning the stage for parlor theatricals, and indeed every thing necessary to give inexperienced performers the preper ideas about arranging plays and tableaux for home amusements. Excerpt from The Mimic Stage: A Series of Dramas, Comedies, Burlesques, and Farces, for Public Exhibitions and Private Theatricals The gratifying success of a previous volume of amateur dramas, and the increasing demand for pieces of a light character suitable for representation without the usual costly theatrical accessories, has induced the writer to prepare a second volume for publication. Like the first, it contains pieces which have been specially prepared for occasional exhi bitions, society benefits, and parlor theatricals, and which have only been admitted to the mimic stage after having stood the test of public approval. For their production, no scenery is required. A moderate-sized room, having folding-doors or hanging curtains to separate the audience from the actors; costumes such as the modern wardrobe will easily supply, with now and then a foray on some good old grandmother's trunks; a wig ortwo; a few pieces of chalk; red paint; and India-ink, -is all the extraordinary preparations and great ex pense necessary. For benefits, fairs, and temperance gather ings, many of the pieces win be found particularly appropriate. To give variety, three dialogues, originally published in Oli ver Optic's Magazine, have, by the kind permission of its popular editor, been added to the collection. Amateur theatri cals have now become a part of the regular winter-evening amusements of young and old; and, with proper management. Since the 1990s, critics and curators have broadly accepted the notion that participatory art is the ultimate political art: that by encouraging an audience to take part an artist can promote new emancipatory social relations. Around the world, the champions of this form of expression are numerous, ranging from art historians such as Grant Kester, curators such as Nicolas Bourriaud and Nato Thompson, to performance theorists such as Shannon Jackson. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as "social practice." Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawe? Althamer and Paul Chan. Since her controversial essay in Artforum in 2006, Claire Bishop has been one of the few to challenge the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art. In Artificial Hells, she not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims made for these projects, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.
