The purpose of the research was to perform scientific study and experimentation on potential new Si-based devices for future optical and electronic applications. The research areas included novel detectors, sources, new properties, and other quantum devices using Si molecular beam epitaxy (Si-MBE) based superlattices and superstructures. With the current ARO support, we have made significant advances in the understanding of optical properties of intersubband transition of SiGe/Si multiple quantum wells, and the fabrication of multiple quantum well infrared detectors operating in the mid infrared range. Large many-body effects have been observed in heavily doped Si and SiGe/Si quantum well structures. Normal incidence intersubband transitions have been demonstrated for both n and p type SiGe/Si quantum well structures. For potential realization of Si-based light sources we have studied the luminescence from monolayer superlattices and strained alloy layers. In the area of quantum transport, a resonant tunneling transistor has been demonstrated ... Intersubband, Quantum Transport, Many-body Effects, Superlattices, Infrared Detectors.

This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Superlattices", held in Erice, Italy, on April 21-May 1, 1987. This course was the fourth one of the International School of Solid-State Device Research, which is under the auspices of the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture. In the last ten years, we have seen an enormous increase in re search in the field of Semiconductor Heterostructures, as evidenced by the large percentage of papers presented in recent international conferences on semiconductor physics. Undoubtfully, this expansion has been made possible by dramatic advances in materials preparation, mostly by molecular beam epitaxy and organometallic chemical vapor deposition. The emphasis on epitaxial growth that was prevalent at the beginning of the decade (thus, the second course of the School, held in 1983, was devoted to Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Heterostructures) has given way to a strong interest in new physical phenomena and new material structures, and to practical applications that are already emerging from them.

It is widely recognized that an understanding of the optical pro perties of matter will give a great deal of important information re levant to the fundamental physical properties. This is especially true in semiconductor physics for which, due to the intrinsic low screening of these materials, the optical response is quite rich. Their spectra reflect indeed as well electronic as spin or phonon transitions. This is also in the semiconductor field that artificial structures have been recently developed, showing for the first time specific physical properties related to the low dimentionality of the electronic and vi bronic properties : with this respect the quantum and fractional quan tum Hall effects are among the most well known aspects. The associated reduced screening is also a clear manifestation of these aspects and as such favors new optical properties or at least significantly enhan ces some of them. For all these reasons, it appeared necessary to try to review in a global way what the optical investigation has brought today about the understanding of the physics of semiconductors. This volume collects the papers presented at the NATO Advanced study Inst i tut e on "Optical Properties of Semiconductors" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Sicily on March 9th to 20th, 1992. This school brought together 70 scientists active in research related to optical properties of semiconductors. There were 12 lecturers who pro vided the main contributions .
