Learn how to better navigate the challenges of adult life with Gail Sheehy’s landmark bestseller—named one of the ten most influential books of our times by the Library of Congress. For decades, Gail Sheehy’s Passages has been inspiring readers to see the predictable crises of adult life as opportunities for growth. She charts the stages between 18 and 50 as unfolding in a pattern of adult development: once recognized, more easily managed. Passages is an insightful road map of adulthood that illustrates with vivid stories our continuing personality and sexual changes throughout the “Trying 20s,” “Catch 30s,” “Forlorn 40s,” and “Refreshed (or Resigned) 50s.” One comment is continuously repeated by men, women, singles, couples, and people who recover from a midlife crisis: “This book changed my life.”

Offers a unique and critical witness to significant historic photographs, from the period of the inception of photography to the Edwardian era. Asserts historic photographs as vivid and lyrical artefacts which live both as a source of enrichment in contemporary artistic experience, and as documentary witness to our own age. Shows photography as an art in intimate cultural conjunction with painting and literature. We cannot travel back into the past! In the garish light of the blaze of contemporary ‘selfies’ and of the digital editing of photographs, photography has lost contact with the abstract impact and the purity of dimension of historic photography. Historic photography offers, instead, a unique and vivid witness to the lived experience of the past - in our own age. In his new book Keith Steiner brings us face to face with historic photographs as both the camera’s memories, and as definitive and enduring entities of the present. He explores how our perceptual dialogue with historic imagery is also an encounter with the bias rooted in our register of the literary, the optical, and the cultural. Keith Steiner’s authoritative, perceptive, illuminating, and penetrating text focuses key examples of historic photography in their fullness of register as artistic, perceptual, philosophic and cultural jewels. These mysterious, haunting photographs are thus revealed by the author in the full light of our age as sometime lyrical, metaphorical encounters of prose and poetry; and equally, and eternally, as of the fabric and geometry of now.

A critical approach to interactive fiction, as literature and game. Interactive fiction—the best-known form of which is the text game or text adventure—has not received as much critical attention as have such other forms of electronic literature as hypertext fiction and the conversational programs known as chatterbots. Twisty Little Passages (the title refers to a maze in Adventure, the first interactive fiction) is the first book-length consideration of this form, examining it from gaming and literary perspectives. Nick Montfort, an interactive fiction author himself, offers both aficionados and first-time users a way to approach interactive fiction that will lead to a more pleasurable and meaningful experience of it. Twisty Little Passages looks at interactive fiction beginning with its most important literary ancestor, the riddle. Montfort then discusses Adventure and its precursors (including the I Ching and Dungeons and Dragons), and follows this with an examination of mainframe text games developed in response, focusing on the most influential work of that era, Zork. He then considers the introduction of commercial interactive fiction for home computers, particularly that produced by Infocom. Commercial works inspired an independent reaction, and Montfort describes the emergence of independent creators and the development of an online interactive fiction community in the 1990s. Finally, he considers the influence of interactive fiction on other literary and gaming forms. With Twisty Little Passages, Nick Montfort places interactive fiction in its computational and literary contexts, opening up this still-developing form to new consideration.

Incorporating elders' recollections of the system of ruled boundaries and ritual passages that guided their parents and grandparents a century ago, Ann Fienup-Riordan brings into focus the complex, creative Yupik world view - expressed by ceremonial exchanges and the cycling of names, gifts, and persons - which continues to shape daily life in communities along the Bering Sea coast. Her analysis is illustrated with many contemporary and historical photographs

Volume VI in the Ben cao gang mu series offers a complete translation of chapters 26 through 33, devoted to vegetables and fruits. The Ben cao gang mu is a sixteenth-century Chinese encyclopedia of medical matter and natural history by Li Shizhen (1518–1593). The culmination of a sixteen-hundred-year history of Chinese medical and pharmaceutical literature, it is considered the most important and comprehensive book ever written in the history of Chinese medicine and remains an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners. This nine-volume series reveals an almost two-millennia-long panorama of wide-ranging observations and sophisticated interpretations, ingenious manipulations, and practical applications of natural substances for the benefit of human health. Paul U. Unschuld's annotated translation of the Ben cao gang mu, presented here with the original Chinese text, opens a rare window into viewing the people and culture of China's past.
