This book presents a study of the development of time reference in young children acquiring Inuktitut as a first language. The first such study of an Eskimo-Aleut language, its account of children's development of time reference in a system that is fundamentally different from those found in languages previously studied makes a unique contribution to the literature on the acquisition of tense and aspect. Drawing on longitudinal spontaneous speech data from eight Inuit children between 2 and 3-and-a-half years old, this study analyzes the temporal structures, their meanings and context of use in children's communicative interactions with siblings, peers and caretakers during the early stages of language development. The comprehensive study of previously unexplored temporal phenomena and its unprecedented findings makes this book an important resource for researchers, teachers and students of child language development, especially the development of time reference. In addition, the documentation of the Inuktitut temporal system, especially as used in conversational speech, will be of interest to researchers of time reference.

"When I finished reading this book, all I could say was WOW! What a stunning piece of literary work... It is concise, brilliantly written, backed by scientific findings, with clear human logic and intelligence. If this doesn't awaken the masses to delve into who and what they truly are, I can't imagine what will." ~ Jerry Issa, teacher of metaphysics, Trenton, Michigan This book will change your life if you let it. If we are accidental beings on a remote planet in a vast universe, existing for merely a blip in cosmic time, what's the point of living at all? Until we learn life is too significant to be a short-lived brilliance that rises out of nothing and ends in nothing, we will continue to live out our lives in, what Thoreau saw as, quiet desperation. We sense the materialistic wall when we ask the question, "Is that all there is?" Without resorting to miracles or magic, this book provides compelling evidence of life beyond the physical world by logically investigating the limitations of matter in the universe, by examining the gaps in scientific theories and by analyzing what the mystics already know about a spiritual existence. It takes a dedicated seeker with no preconceived ideas and no intent on arriving to see beyond the materialistic wall. This book is intended to expand your awareness of life here and hereafter, hopefully providing the spark that will start you on your own personal pilgrimage. The mystics tell us we will be guided to the next step along our spiritual path when we are ready. Are you ready? AWARENESS: The following might be the thoughts of those at different levels of awareness as they walk through a rose garden. I want - I wonder how much I could get for these roses. I believe - God created roses when He created the world and everything in it. I doubt - Roses evolved from wild flowering shrubs, but most garden varieties are hybrids. I seek - How could anything as beautiful as a rose happen purely by chance? I know - Roses, like all life on Earth, are physical manifestations of spirit.

"Words of the Inuit" is an important compendium of Inuit culture illustrated through Inuit words. It brings the sum of the author’s decades of experience and engagement with Inuit and Inuktitut to bear on what he fashions as an amiable, leisurely stroll through words and meanings. Inuit words are often more complex than English words and frequently contain small units of meaning that add up to convey a larger sensibility. Dorais’ lexical and semantic analyses and reconstructions are not overly technical, yet they reliably evince connections and underlying significations that allow for an in-depth reflection on the richness of Inuit linguistic and cultural heritage and identity. An appendix on the polysynthetic character of Inuit languages includes more detailed grammatical description of interest to more specialist readers. Organized thematically, the book tours the histories and meanings of the words to illuminate numerous aspects of Inuit culture, including environment and the land; animals and subsistence activities; humans and spirits; family, kinship, and naming; the human body; and socializing with other people in the contemporary world. It concludes with a reflection on the usefulness for modern Inuit—especially youth and others looking to strengthen their cultural identity —to know about the underlying meanings embedded in their language and culture. With recent reports alerting us to the declining use of the Inuit language in the North, "Words of the Inuit" is a timely contribution to understanding one of the world’s most resilient Indigenous languages.

Things began to go wrong when Frobisher Bay stays ice locked and ships cannot get in to replenish the diesel fuel or bring much needed food into Iqaluit. As Rosa Mama unravels the story of her husband’s death, deceit and denial worm their way into a culture and way of life already made difficult by the environment. Most of our Inuit community are happy people, though we older members struggle a little with understanding the Outsiders’ ways. It is sad that we have come to depend so much on goods from the South, which have to be shipped into Iqaluit during the fall or flown in at great expense. But this summer has been like no other. It is the Summer of Ice, and this is my account of the events that caused great hardship in our family. Abraham and his son, Peter Qaqquasiq, are not happy. Since Peter’s mother left the family, Peter has been causing trouble and getting other teenagers into trouble, but my grandson, Adam, has become a strong young man because of the problems with him. Adam’s parents have difficulty relating to him at times, but I thank God that I was able to help him in some small ways. - Rosa Aariak
