This book is a call to return to our American roots; to remember our heritage and birthright. Most importantly, it is a reminder that our oaths are binding, and we have a responsibility to ourselves and our posterity to honor them. Douglas Hogan writes in a style that is both direct and candid. No words are minced; there is no “beating around the bush” or “tip-toeing through tulips”. Douglas says what he means, and his incredible passion is ample evidence that he means what he says. This book is a must read for anybody that has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. You are OATH TAKERS.

T. A. Cavanaugh's Hippocrates' Oath and Asclepius' Snake: The Birth of the Medical Profession articulates the Oath as establishing the medical profession's unique internal medical ethic - in its most basic and least controvertible form, this ethic mandates that physicians help and not harm the sick. Relying on Greek myth, drama, and medical experience (e.g., homeopathy), the book shows how this medical ethic arose from reflection on the most vexing medical-ethical problem -- injury caused by a physician -- and argues that deliberate iatrogenic harm, especially the harm of a doctor choosing to kill (physician assisted suicide, euthanasia, abortion, and involvement in capital punishment), amounts to an abandonment of medicine as an exclusively therapeutic profession. The book argues that medicine as a profession necessarily involves stating before others what one stands for: the good one seeks and the bad one seeks to avoid on behalf of the sick, and rejects the view that medicine is purely a technique lacking its own unique internal ethic. It concludes noting that medical promising (as found in the White Coat Ceremony through which U. S. medical students matriculate) implicates medical autonomy which in turn merits respect, including honoring professional conscientious objections.

I Swear: The Meaning of an Oath looks at how taking an oath may impact the obligations of the oath taker, and the perceptions and expectations of those around him. The book begins with Aeschylus - "It is not the oath that makes us believe the man, but the man the oath." The author explores whether Aeschylus was correct through stories of diverse and varied individuals who took an oath - doctor, lawyer, priest, journalist, CIA director, "made man," and president, to name a few. Most of the time, people are able to keep their oath. But what happens when the decision to keep an oath may result in an injustice, or a situation where others are hurt? What do your oaths mean to you, and what do they mean to those around you? Do societal pressures allow one to break his oath? What does your moral compass tell you to do when violating your oath is somehow the "right" thing to do, however wrong it is, because you're violating it?
