Abstract: Fourteen lectures from a recent European symposium discuss the consequences of nutrition practices in early childhood on subsequent human physical and mental development for nutritionists, pediatricians, and other health professionals. Emphasis is placed on the ideal nutritional and preventive health value of mothers' milk for infants, the effect of severe infant malnutrition on brain development and behavior in later years, and the health risks associated with infant and child obesity and restricted food intake. Related lectures address protein and carbohydrate nutrition, early salt intakes, and the effects of childhood nutrition practices on serum lipids and lipoproteins in later life. (wz).
