He was an exceptionally successful teacher of the classic authors during thirty-eight years in universities, and published several text-books for the use of students of the Greek language. During the last sixteen years of his public life he taught theological classes in New Testament Greek, and sought to apply the same methods of exact scholarship to the critical elucidation of the original text of the New Testament as had proved so fruitful in classical Greek.
