This thesis discusses a sensor that was developed for simultaneous, time resolved measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). This sensor utilizes low-cost and compact light emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit in the 3-5[micrometer] wavelength range. Light emission of LEDs is spectrally broader and more spatially divergent compared to that of lasers, which presented many design challenges. Optical design studies addressed some of the non-ideal characteristics of the LED emissions. Measurements of CO and CO2 were conducted using their fundamental absorption bands centered at 4.7[micrometer] and 4.3[micrometer], respectively, while a 3.6[micrometer] reference LED was used to account for scattering losses (e.g., due to soot, window deposits, etc.) common to the three measurement LEDs. Instrument validation and calibration was performed using a laboratory flow cell and bottled-gas mixtures. The sensor was able to detect CO2 and CO concentration changes as small as 30 ppm and 400 ppm, respectively. Because of the many control and monitor species with infra-red absorption features, which can be measured using the strategy described, this work demonstrates proof of concept for a wider range of fast (250Hz) and low cost sensors for gas measurement and process monitoring.

Here, a sensor was developed for simultaneous measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluctuations in internal combustion engine exhaust gases. This sensor utilizes low-cost and compact light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit in the 3-5 μm wavelength range. An affordable, fast response sensor that can measure these gases has a broad application that can lead to more efficient, fuel-flexible engines and regulation of harmful emissions. Light emission from LEDs is spectrally broader and more spatially divergent when compared to that of lasers, which presented many design challenges. Optical design studies addressed some of the non-ideal characteristics of the LED emissions. Measurements of CO and CO2 were conducted using their fundamental absorption bands centered at 4.7 μm and 4.3 μm, respectively, while a 3.6 μm reference LED was used to account for scattering losses (due to soot, window deposits, etc.) common to the three measurement LEDs. In this thesis the development of a single pass non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) CO2 gas sensor with a path length of 30mm and with a lowest level CO2 detectivity of 20 ppm is described. A single pass NDIR CO2 sensor was developed in order to better understand the effect of the different sensor components i.e. the infrared source, thermal detector and the interference filter has on the NDIR CO2 gas sensor's sensing ability for the industrial gas sensing application. The study of various IR sources, detectors and filters has resulted in developing methodology that can be used for characterising IR sources detectors and filters from an application point of view. Theobtained result from such application specific characterisation shows a more realistic measure ofthe NDIR CO2 sensor's individual components performance characteristic, than what is quotedby the manufacturer of the IR sources, detectors and filters. The developed characterisationmethodology is novel in its own right as such methodology currently to the author's knowledgedoes not exist in the available literature. In order to better understand the effect of different infrared (IR) source, detectors and filters four different types of IR sources (microbulb, membrane type source, IR-LED source and ICX 2D metallophotonic crystal sources/detector pair), three different type of IR detectors Pyroelectricdetectors, Thermopile detectors and 2D-metallo photonic crystal source/detector pair and two interference filters were investigated. A new amplitude modulation (AM) scheme was developed for driving the 2D-metallo photonic crystal device as a detector. This has resulted in an improvement of the 2D-metallo photonic crystal devices detectivity by a factor of 102 compared to the standard/conventional/recommended scheme. Demonstrations of the performance of the developed NDIR CO2 gas sensor are also shown in this thesis.
