A pro-p group is the inverse limit of some system of finite p-groups, that is, of groups of prime-power order where the prime - conventionally denoted p - is fixed. Thus from one point of view, to study a pro-p group is the same as studying an infinite family of finite groups; but a pro-p group is also a compact topological group, and the compactness works its usual magic to bring 'infinite' problems down to manageable proportions. The p-adic integers appeared about a century ago, but the systematic study of pro-p groups in general is a fairly recent development. Although much has been dis covered, many avenues remain to be explored; the purpose of this book is to present a coherent account of the considerable achievements of the last several years, and to point the way forward. Thus our aim is both to stimulate research and to provide the comprehensive background on which that research must be based. The chapters cover a wide range. In order to ensure the most authoritative account, we have arranged for each chapter to be written by a leading contributor (or contributors) to the topic in question. Pro-p groups appear in several different, though sometimes overlapping, contexts.

This collection of expository articles by a range of established experts and newer researchers provides an overview of the recent developments in the theory of locally compact groups. It includes introductory articles on totally disconnected locally compact groups, profinite groups, p-adic Lie groups and the metric geometry of locally compact groups. Concrete examples, including groups acting on trees and Neretin groups, are discussed in detail. An outline of the emerging structure theory of locally compact groups beyond the connected case is presented through three complementary approaches: Willis' theory of the scale function, global decompositions by means of subnormal series, and the local approach relying on the structure lattice. An introduction to lattices, invariant random subgroups and L2-invariants, and a brief account of the Burger–Mozes construction of simple lattices are also included. A final chapter collects various problems suggesting future research directions.

This is a volume of research articles related to finite groups. Topics covered include the classification of finite simple groups, the theory of p-groups, cohomology of groups, representation theory and the theory of buildings and geometries. As well as more than twenty original papers on the latest developments, which will be of great interest to specialists, the volume contains several expository articles, from which students and non-experts can learn about the present state of knowledge and promising directions for further research. The Finite Groups 2003 conference was held in honor of John Thompson. The profound influence of his fundamental contributions is clearly visible in this collection of papers dedicated to him.

This volume consists of contributions by researchers who were invited to the Harlaxton Conference on Computational Group Theory and Cohomology, held in August of 2008, and to the AMS Special Session on Computational Group Theory, held in October 2008. This volume showcases examples of how Computational Group Theory can be applied to a wide range of theoretical aspects of group theory. Among the problems studied in this book are classification of p-groups, covers of Lie groups, resolutions of Bieberbach groups, and the study of the lower central series of free groups. This volume also includes expository articles on the probabilistic zeta function of a group and on enumerating subgroups of symmetric groups. Researchers and graduate students working in all areas of Group Theory will find many examples of how Computational Group Theory helps at various stages of the research process, from developing conjectures through the verification stage. These examples will suggest to the mathematician ways to incorporate Computational Group Theory into their own research endeavors.

This volume deals systematically with connections between algebraic number theory and low-dimensional topology. Of particular note are various inspiring interactions between number theory and low-dimensional topology discussed in most papers in this volume. For example, quite interesting are the use of arithmetic methods in knot theory and the use of topological methods in Galois theory. Also, expository papers in both number theory and topology included in the volume can help a wide group of readers to understand both fields as well as the interesting analogies and relations that bring them together.
