Excerpt from New Hope for Human Unity This book was written mainly in August and the first week of September, Events in October and early November, especially the Moscow Conference and the Connally Resolution in the United States Senate, put any subsequent discussion of isolationism as a basis for international policy quite out of court. International commitments caught up so rapidly with the reasoning of the internationalists that their en thusiasms began to seem beside the point. Some pas sages ih the present text may thus appear outdated. Although it was possible to revise a few of the orig inal statements which gave to the argument the ring of punishment administered to a straw man, there was no time to exclude all references to the isolation ist point of View. Nor did this seem desirable. This discussion refers to isolationist ideas and attitudes once widely prevalent among citizens of the United States 5 and isolationist thinking of some sort still per sists among large sections of our population. It is cer tain to reappear in many noxious and obstructive forms at crucial points. Furthermore, the isolationistpoint of view is so natural that there is a continuing problem for education in meeting it. Since these pages are addressed primarily to American teachers, it is fair to ask those who read the book to dismiss the few contemporary references which may now appear irrelevant and to fix their attention on the permanent issues with which the book attempts to deal. Dr. George F. Kneller of Yale University, student and teacher of comparative education, now on an international educational mission for the United States Office of Education, gave to this book in manu script a friendly but unsparing criticism which saved it from some of the faults and weaknesses it would otherwise have shown. Many of those that remain are present in spite of his generosity, here most grate fully acknowledged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "A dazzling journey across the sciences and humanities in search of deep laws to unite them." —The Wall Street Journal One of our greatest scientists—and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for On Human Nature and The Ants—gives us a work of visionary importance that may be the crowning achievement of his career. In Consilience (a word that originally meant "jumping together"), Edward O. Wilson renews the Enlightenment's search for a unified theory of knowledge in disciplines that range from physics to biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Using the natural sciences as his model, Wilson forges dramatic links between fields. He explores the chemistry of the mind and the genetic bases of culture. He postulates the biological principles underlying works of art from cave-drawings to Lolita. Presenting the latest findings in prose of wonderful clarity and oratorical eloquence, and synthesizing it into a dazzling whole, Consilience is science in the path-clearing traditions of Newton, Einstein, and Richard Feynman.

Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one! Excerpt from The Unity of the Human Race: A Lecture Delivered Before the Members of the Belleville Young Men's Christian Association, on the Evening of the 19th March, 1860; And Now Published at Their Request In calling attention to a theme which is probably compa ratively new to many in this community, it is a sufficient apology to say, that from its important scientific, religious, and practical bearings, it is daily exciting increasing interest in the great centres of thought on both sides of the Atlantic, and that 1t has already, in many quarters, become the battle ground between Christianity and Infidelity. Until a recent period it has been the received belief, both of philosophers and of christians, that the whole human family, in all its varieties of color, and physical conformation, sprang originally from a common stock, which God created and placed in Eden. “This superb [essay] collection enables readers of Invisible Man to appreciate the subtleties of its cultural and political commentary.” —Journal of American Studies An important collection of original essays that examine how Ellison’s landmark novel, Invisible Man (1952), addresses the social, cultural, political, economic, and racial contradictions of America. Commenting on the significance of Mark Twain’s writings, Ralph Ellison wrote that “a novel could be fashioned as a raft of hope, perception and entertainment that might help keep us afloat as we tried to negotiate the snags and whirlpools that mark our nation’s vacillating course toward and away from the democratic ideal.” Ellison believed it was the contradiction between America’s “noble ideals and the actualities of our conduct” that inspired the most profound literature?”the American novel at its best.” Drawing from the fields of literature, politics, law, and history, the contributors make visible the political and ethical terms of Invisible Man , while also illuminating Ellison’s understanding of democracy and art. Ralph Ellison and the Raft of Hope uniquely demonstrates why Invisible Man stands as a premier literary meditation on American democracy. “Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding Ellison’s political thought.” —Lawrence Jackson, author of Ralph Ellison: Emergence of Genius “Outstanding. . . . Provides an interdisciplinary perspective of the politics of the book.” —Lexington Herald-Leader “These essays . . . demonstrate that a great work of art has the capacity to renew itself across generations.” —Pamela K. Jensen, Kenyon College “This careful study of Ellison’s great novel is highly recommended for all serious students of American and African American literature.” —African American Review
