The field of control provides the principles and methods used to design physical and information systems that maintain desirable performance by sensing and automatically adapting to changes in the environment. This report spells out some of the prospects for control in the current and future technological environment, describes the role the field will play in military, commercial, and scientific applications over the next decade, and recommends actions required to enable new breakthroughs in engineering and technology through the application of control research. This brief yet thorough report provides renewed vision, a detailed list of new application areas, and specific recommendations for future research directions in control, dynamics, and systems, compiled by experts in the field.

This work examines viability theory and its applications to control theory and differential games. The emphasis is on the construction of feedbacks and dynamical systems by myopic optimization methods. Systems of first-order partial differential inclusions, whose solutions are feedbacks, are constructed and investigated. Basic results are then extended to the case of fuzzy control problems, distributed control problems, and control systems with delays and memory. Aimed at graduate students and research mathematicians, both pure and applied, this book offers specialists in control and nonlinear systems tools to take into account general state constraints. Viability theory also allows researchers in other disciplinesâartificial intelligence, economics, game theory, theoretical biology, population genetics, cognitive sciencesâto go beyond deterministic models by studying them in a dynamical or evolutionary perspective in an uncertain environment. "The book is a compendium of the state of knowledge about viability...Mathematically, the book should be accessible to anyone who has had basic graduate courses in modern analysis and functional analysisâ¦The concepts are defined and many proofs of the requisite results are reproduced here, making the present book essentially self-contained." (Bulletin of the AMS) "Because of the wide scope, the book is an ideal reference for people encountering problems related to viability theory in their researchâ¦It gives a very thorough mathematical presentation. Very useful for anybody confronted with viability constraints." (Mededelingen van het Wiskundig Genootschap)

Mathematical control theory has evolved from the study of practical problems in engineering and sciences to the elaboration of deep, important concepts in mathematics and applied sciences. This volume concerns contemporary trends in nonlinear geometric control theory and its applications. It is a fine collection of papers presenting new results, relevant open problems, and important applications regarding academic and real-world problems. The book is dedicated to Velimir Jurdjevic whose scientific activity has been influential in the research of many of the authors. It contains a number of articles specially written by colleagues and friends of Vel Jurdjevic, all of them leading applied mathematicians and control theorists. There is also place for surveys on topics of current research which present the state of the art of modern geometric control theory. Finally, the volume contains several new mathematical ideas generated by geometric control theory techniques, which may initiate new directions of research beyond control theory.

This book presents an authoritative collection of contributions by researchers from 16 different countries (Austria, Chile, Georgia, Germany, Mexico, Norway, P.R. of China, Poland, North Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and United States) that report on recent developments and new directions in advanced control systems, together with new theoretical findings, industrial applications and case studies on complex engineering systems. This book is dedicated to Professor Vsevolod Mykhailovych Kuntsevich, an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and President of the National Committee of the Ukrainian Association on Automatic Control, in recognition of his pioneering works, his great scientific and scholarly achievements, and his years of service to many scientific and professional communities, notably those involved in automation, cybernetics, control, management and, more specifically, the fundamentals and applications of tools and techniques for dealing with uncertain information, robustness, non-linearity, extremal systems, discrete control systems, adaptive control systems and others. Covering essential theories, methods and new challenges in control systems design, the book is not only a timely reference guide but also a source of new ideas and inspirations for graduate students and researchers alike. Its 15 chapters are grouped into four sections: (a) fundamental theoretical issues in complex engineering systems, (b) artificial intelligence and soft computing for control and decision-making systems, (c) advanced control techniques for industrial and collaborative automation, and (d) modern applications for management and information processing in complex systems. All chapters are intended to provide an easy-to-follow introduction to the topics addressed, including the most relevant references. At the same time, they reflect various aspects of the latest research work being conducted around the world and, therefore, provide information on the state of the art.
