After Gandhi, if there was any person who left an indelible impression on the Indian polity, both during the independence struggle as well as afterwards, it was Jawaharlal Nehru, a fiery meteor in the Indian firmament. Rightly described as the architect of modern India, Nehru has left behind him a legacy that has both positive as well as negative dimensions. A charismatic leader, he applied his thought process to contemporary Indian political, social, economic and other problems in oder to effect conditions of economic development, a stable political order and an atmosphere of social stbility. Nehru's concerns are relevant today especially when the individual is pitted against the nation and the nation against the Indian state. Nehru's concern with science and technology, rapid industrialisation secularism, individual freedom ina democratic set up, indigenous nationalism, economic planning etc, were evident during his participation in the freedom struggle and subsequently as Prime Minister of Independent India for seventeen eyars Nehru's nationalism was synonymous too with ideas on Internationalism-hence his enunciation of the policy of non-alignment which made a distinctie contribution to world affairs. In the process he raised the status of India as a dominant moral force in world affairs and he himself became a world statesman of a very high order.
