Excerpt from Narrative of a Tour Through France, Italy, and Switzerland: In a Series of Letters These Letters were written in the year 1867 during a Continental tour, undertaken by the advice of my physicians, in order to obtain for a time that entire relief from business which was considered indispensable for me. They were addressed to my Family at home, without the slightest notion that they would ever appear in print, nor had such a thought occurred to me since, until a recent circumstance suggested it to my mind. I then showed the MS. to my Bookseller, who at once offered to publish it at his own pecuniary risk. Since the Letters were written, the Papal territory has become annexed to the present Kingdom of Italy, and the solemnities of Holy Week and Easter at Rome, as hereinafter described, have consequently ceased and may never again be witnessed.
