Paul Leopold Rosenfeld (1890-1946) was an American journalist, best known as a music critic. He studied at Riverview Military Academy, Poughkeepsie, and Yale University, graduating in 1912. After further education at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, he became a prolific journalist, writing on literature and art as well as music. He was one of the Alfred Stieglitz circle, and favoured an intellectually-heavyweight and quite European approach. Magazines which published Rosenfelds writing included: The New Republic, Seven Arts, Vanity Fair magazine, The Nation, The Dial and Modern Music. He edited Seven Arts from 1916 to 1918, and was an editor of the American Caravan yearbooks. His works include: Musical Portraits: Interpretations of Twenty Modern Composers (1920), Musical Chronicle (1923), Port of New York (1924), Men Seen (1925), The Boy in the Sun (1928), By Way of Art (1928), An Hour With American Music (1929) and Discoveries of a Music Critic (1936).

Musical Portraits Interpretations of Twenty Modern Composers by Paul Rosenfeld Wagner's music, more than any other, is the sign and symbol of the nineteenth century. The men to whom it was disclosed, and who first sought to refuse, and then accepted it, passionately, without reservations, found in it their truth. It came to their ears as the sound of their own voices. It was the common, the universal tongue. Not alone on Germany, not alone on Europe, but on every quarter of the globe that had developed coal-power civilization, the music of Wagner descended with the formative might of the perfect image. Men of every race and continent knew it to be of themselves as much as was their hereditary and racial music, and went out to it as to their own adventure. And wherever music reappeared, whether under the hand of the Japanese or the semi-African or the Yankee, it seemed to be growing from Wagner as the bright shoots of the fir sprout from the dark ones grown the previous year. A whole world, for a period, came to use his idiom. His dream was recognized during his very lifetime as an integral portion of the consciousness of the entire race. When we try to picture to ourselves the intellectual and moral state of Europe in the Middle Ages, some fixed and almost stereotyped ideas immediately suggest themselves. We think of the nations immersed in a gross mental lethargy; passively witnessing the gradual extinction of arts and sciences which Greece and Rome had splendidly inaugurated; allowing libraries and monuments of antique civilisation to crumble into dust; while they trembled under a dull and brooding terror of coming judgment, shrank from natural enjoyment as from deadly sin, or yielded themselves with brutal eagerness to the satisfaction of vulgar appetites. Preoccupation with the other world in this long period weakens man's hold upon the things that make his life desirable. Philosophy is sunk in the slough of ignorant, perversely subtle disputation upon subjects destitute of actuality. Theological fanaticism has extinguished liberal studies and the gropings of the reason after truth in positive experience.
