The question of land tenure is returning on the agenda and many countries are showing renewed interest in the different ways of accessing natural resources with a view to eventually introducing land reforms. in the context of food security, world-wide poverty alleviation, environmental protection or quality of life. This is why FAO has prepared this multilingual thesaurus. This publication will contribute to clarifying the debate on land subjects as well as to making the related field interventions more efficient thanks to the presentation of an unambiguous or unequivocal terminology of the various subject matters related to land tenure.

In line with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure (VGGT), public and private investments globally are increasingly recognising responsible land governance as a determinant for the success and sustainability of their achievements. Investment managers understand that preventing and mitigating tenure related issues is a necessary step to achieve their objectives. While a wide range of tools, community-based participatory approaches, and technologies are available to help clarify, protect and secure tenure rights, navigating this landscape requires expertise which is often not available to investment projects. This guide provides readers with a basic understanding of the functional linkages between land tenure and land-based investments. It illustrates the process of protecting and securing legitimate tenure rights through recordation, describes how to use fit-for-purpose technology to strengthen / support the process, identifies choices in selecting the appropriate technology based on objectives and context, and provides clear criteria to inform the choice.

In this book, ten substantive chapters examine how collisions between technological developments (globalizing forces) and thickening populist pressures (localizing dynamics) constantly keep reinventing the state in unforeseen and unpredictable ways. We learn of how international organizations have fared, and to what extent grass-roots grumbles have impacted big-picture developments in quite diverse parts of the world. Just placing unfolding crises under the microscope cannot but generate policy-solving observations. Treated in corresponding order, these crises revolve around adjusting international institutions; absorbing current populist outbursts; shifting from peacekeeping to peacemaking; spying in the global south; absorbing displaced persons; Rwandan land reform; pandemic and RMG readjustments; Bangladesh’s democratic transition; Rohingyan-Syrian refugees; and Mexico’s 1990s liberalization. Though overarching, observations in the book accent state strength battling with state porosity; the downward spiraling of global order; and the simple lack of any controlling mechanism against globalizing/localizing dynamics in the trenches of everyday life being matched by continued uncertainty on the analytical plane.

In Challenging Social Exclusion: Multi-sectoral Approaches to Realising Social Justice in East Africa contributing authors interrogate the question of social justice in East Africa, unravelling how people who live on the margins of society are cheated of their livelihoods. The work delves into thorny issues in social justice and recommends ways of addressing them. Based on recent field research, the book is informed by views from latest scholarly works. Issues about social justice from various areas including judiciary, health, land law, education and legal institutions are presented and explained. The authors, through examples from different sectors across East Africa, establish that attainment of social justice is the foremost concern of the legal sector in relation to social protection and resource sharing. They show that the justice, law and order institutions are means through which social justice should be accessed without discrimination of the poor, marginalised and vulnerable people. Contributing writers are scholars from various backgrounds including development studies, social work and law. The book is written in clear language and well organised. It addresses the needs of social workers, local government leaders, women and gender activists, the legal fraternity and the general reader.
