Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Belle Starr, Wyatt Earp, the Younger Gang, the Dalton-Doolin Gang and Bat Masterson--these real-life lawmen and lawbreakers have been the basis of so many Hollywood Westerns that it has become difficult to discover where the truth ends and the legend begins. All actually became larger-than-life characters during their lifetimes, as contemporary newspapers and books embellished their deeds for their own purposes. But it was in Hollywood that the line between reality and myth was completely blurred. Each chapter-length entry here first focuses on the known facts of the people's lives and how each became truly legendary during their lifetimes. The reality is then compared to how they have been portrayed in the movies.

Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers, Vol. 31: July, 1938 After 1934, the process of optically reducing the sound-track from 35-mm. Negative to 16-mm. Print became the most widely used method of producing 16-mm. Sound-films. Certainly the excellence of the results that were attained justified the widespread adoption of the method. But this brought with it a complication of the stand ards problem. Optical printers were designed to reduce the inch variable-width track on the 35-mm. Film to a width of inch on 16-mm. Film. This ratio of 60 to 71 gave a reduced variable density track having a width of inch instead of the -inch width called for by the 1934 standard. Eventually the 35-mm. Standard was changed to specify a track space inch wide in v.ariable-width recording. This track, on the optical reduction printer, gave a 16-mm. Print having a track width of inch. King Vidor (1894-1982) had the longest career of any Hollywood director, and his works include some of the most dramatic, sublime moments in the history of American cinema. Regarded by many film historians as one of the greatest of silent era filmmakers--especially for masterworks The Big Parade, The Crowd, and Show People--Vidor is nonetheless one of the most underrated of Hollywood's "old masters" in terms of his overall career. His sound era films include Hallelujah, Street Scene, The Champ, The Stranger's Return, Our Daily Bread, Stella Dallas, The Citadel, Northwest Passage, Duel in the Sun, Beyond the Forest, The Fountainhead, Ruby Gentry and War and Peace. He also helped to establish the Screen Directors Guild and served as its first president. This book charts the ways in which Vidor's vast, complex body of work ranges over diverse genres and styles while also expressing his recurring personal interests in spirituality (especially Christian Science), aesthetics, metaphysics, social realism, and the myth of America. The first book since 1988 to give a comprehensive view of Vidor's career, it discusses his artistic evolution in a way that appeals to the general reader as well as to the film scholar.
