In this dissertation I explore the historically overlooked question of how Panamanians tell the story of the Panama Canal. In particular, I analyze the construction of Panamanian racial and national identities through and against the canal. To this end, I assert that the canal is not a neutral, inert or pre-determined space, but rather a signifier or symbol that is socially constructed through a multiplicity of narratives and lived experiences. The historiographic, literary, and visual narratives that I analyze constitute a diverse archive of canal memories: three Panama Canal history museums (El Centro de Visitantes de Miraflores, El Museo del Canal Interoceanico de Panama, and El Museo Afroantillano de Panama); Joaquin Beleno's novelas canaleras; journalistic and photographic archives of the US Invasion of Panama; short stories of the post-Invasion by Hector Miguel Collado and Pedro Luis Prados; documentaries filmed over the backdrop of the 1999 canal handover and the 2006 referendum that approved its expansion project by Hector Herrera and Ana Endara Mislov. Each chapter interrogates the selective nature of official timelines, narratives, and spatial imaginaries that erase, downplay, or distort racial histories and contribute to an occluded view of the recent past, namely the 1989 US Invasion of Panama. My theoretical framework is interdisciplinary and draws upon intersections in memory, space, race, and gender studies. Firmly grounded in a cultural studies approach, this project draws upon research from traditional archives, but also examines the practices of educational and cultural institutions that craft and disseminate canal memories. Whether analyzing the foundational fictions studied in high schools, the oral histories at the West Indian Museum of Panama, or the testimonial short stories of survivors of the Invasion, I assert the centrality of narratives in telling canal history and constructing modern Panama.
