General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a 2.5G cellular technology introduced as a bearer service for Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). In this thesis, we describe the development of a GPRS simulation model using the OPNET network simulation tool. We implement Base Station Subsystem (BSS), cell update procedure, Radio Link Control/Medium Access Control (RLC/MAC), and Base Station Subsystem GPRS protocol in the OPNET GPRS model. The developed model supports mobile nodes and two Quality of Service profiles. We simulate end-to-end delay and cell update mechanism and employ the simulation results to validate the OPNET implementation. We also evaluate the effect of cell update on GPRS end-to-end delay, time to process signaling messages, and link throughput. We simulate scenarios with and without cell updates using a network consisting of 15 users to illustrate that the end-to-end delay as perceived by the user and signaling processing time increase with cell update.

This book presents revised versions of tutorial lectures given at the IEEE/CS symposium on modeling, analysis, and simulation of computer and telecommunication systems held in Orlando, FL, USA in October 2003. The lectures are grouped in three parts on performance and QoS of modern wired and wireless networks, current advances in performance modeling and simulation, and other specific applications of these methodologies. This tutorial book is targeted to both practitioners and researchers. The practitioner will benefit from numerous pointers to performance and QoS issues; the pedagogical style and plenty of references can be of great use in solving practical problems. The researcher and advanced student are offered a representative set of topics not only for their research value but also for their novelty and use in identifying areas of active research.

It was with great pleasure that, on behalf of the entire organizing committee, I welcomed participants to EDCC-4, the Fourth European Dependable Computing Conference, held for the ?rst time in France. The fourth issue of EDCC carried on the traditions established bythe previous conferences in this series: EDCC-1 was held in Berlin (Germany) in October 1994, EDCC-2 in Taormina (Italy) in October 1996, and EDCC-3 in Prague (Czech Republic) in September 1999. EDCC evolved from a merger of tow other conference series at the moment when the Iron Curtain fell. One of these, known as the ”International Conf- ence on Fault-Tolerant Computing Systems”, was organized during the period 1982–1991, bythe German Technical Interest Group ”Fault-Tolerant Computing Systems”. The other series, known as the ”International Conference on Fault- Tolerant Systems and Diagnostics”, was organized during the period 1975–1990 in the former Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, and the former GDR. The c- position of the EDCC steering committee and the organizing committees of the successive issues of the conference have mirrored the East–West uni?cation ch- acter of the conference series. The EDCC conference is becoming a unique meeting point for researchers and practitioners from all over the world in the ?eld of Dependable Systems. It is organized bythe SEE Working Group ”Dependable Computing” in France, the GI/ITG/GMA Technical Committee on Dependabilityand Fault Tolerance in Germany, and the AICA Working Group ”Dependability of Computer Systems” in Italy. Furthermore, committees of several global professional organizations, such as IEEE and IFIP, support the conference.

"The BIM Handbook is an extensively researched and meticulously written book, showing evidence of years of work rather than something that has been quickly put together in the course of a few months. It brings together most of the current information about BIM, its history, as well as its potential future in one convenient place, and can serve as a handy reference book on BIM for anyone who is involved in the design, construction, and operation of buildings and needs to know about the technologies that support it. The need for such a book is indisputable, and it is terrific that Chuck Eastman and his team were able to step up to the plate and make it happen. Thanks to their efforts, anyone in the AEC industry looking for a deeper understanding of BIM now knows exactly where to look for it." AECbytes book review, August 28, 2008 (www.aecbytes.com/review/2008/BIMHandbook.html) DISCOVER BIM: A BETTER WAY TO BUILD BETTER BUILDINGS Building Information Modeling (BIM) offers a novel approach to design, construction, and facility management in which a digital representation of the building process is used to facilitate the exchange and interoperability of information in digital format. BIM is beginning to change the way buildings look, the way they function, and the ways in which they are designed and built. The BIM Handbook, Second Edition provides an in-depth understanding of BIM technologies, the business and organizational issues associated with its implementation, and the profound advantages that effective use of BIM can provide to all members of a project team. Updates to this edition include: Completely updated material covering the current practice and technology in this fast-moving field Expanded coverage of lean construction and its use of BIM, with special focus on Integrated Project Delivery throughout the book New insight on the ways BIM facilitates sustainable building New information on interoperability schemas and collaboration tools Six new case studies Painting a colorful and thorough picture of the state of the art in building information modeling, the BIM Handbook, Second Edition guides readers to successful implementations, helping them to avoid needless frustration and costs and take full advantage of this paradigm-shifting approach to construct better buildings that consume fewer materials and require less time, labor, and capital resources.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second IFIP-TC6 Netw- king Conference, Networking 2002. Networking 2002 was sponsored bythe IFIP Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. For this reason the conference was structured into three tracks: i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols, ii) Perf- mance of Computer and Communication Networks, and iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. This year the conference received 314 submissions coming from 42 countries from all ?ve continents Africa (4), Asia (84), America (63), Europe (158), and Oc- nia (5). This represents a 50% increase in submissions over the ?rst conference, thus indicating that Networking is becoming a reference conference for wor- wide researchers in the networking community. With so manypapers to choose from, the job of the Technical Program C- mittee, to provide a conference program of the highest technical excellence, was both challenging and time consuming. From the 314 submissions, we ?nallys- ected 82 full papers for presentation during the conference technical sessions. To give young researchers and researchers from emerging countries the oppor- nityto present their work and to receive useful feedback from participants, we decided to include two poster sessions during the technical program. Thirty-one short papers were selected for presentation during the poster sessions. The conference technical program was split into three days, and included, in addition to the 82 refereed contributions, 5 invited papers from top-level rese- chers in the networking community.
