The advent of Substrate Integrated Circuit (SIC) technology, and specifically Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology has made it feasible to design and fabricate low loss and high quality factor (Q-factor) microwave and millimeter wave structures on a compact and integrable layout and at a low cost. The SIW structure is the planar realization of the conventional rectangular waveguide (RWG). In this technology, the side walls of the waveguide are replaced with two rows of metallic vias, which are connecting two conductor sheets, located at the top and bottom of a dielectric slab. The motivation for this thesis has been to develop an analytical method to efficiently analyze SIW structures, and also design different types of passive microwave components based on this technology. As SIW structures are imitating waveguide structures in a planar format, the field distributions inside these structures are very close to those in waveguides. However, due to the very small substrate height in conventional planar technologies, and also the existence of a row of vias, instead of a solid metallic wall, there is a reduced set of modes in SIW compared to regular waveguide. This fact has given us an opportunity to deploy efficient modal analysis techniques to analyze these structures. In this thesis, we present a Mode Matching Techniques (MMT) approach for the analysis of H-plane SIW structures. One of the areas of application, which can significantly benefit from having an efficient analytical method, is designing and optimizing new circuits. Having such an analytical tool, which is faster than commercially available field solvers by an order of magnitude, new components can be designed, analyzed and optimized in a fast and inexpensive manner. Based on this technique, various types of passive microwave components including filters, diplexers, power dividers and couplers, some of which are among the first to be reported in SIW technology, are designed and analyzed in this thesis. Also based on this technique, the most accurate formula for the effective waveguide width of the SIW is presented in this thesis.

Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) is a new type of transmission line. It implements a waveguide on a piece of printed circuit board by emulating the side walls of the waveguide using two rows of metal posts. It inherits the merits both from the microstrip for compact size and easy integration, and from the waveguide for low radiation loss, and thus opens another door to design efficient microwave circuits and antennas at a low cost. This book presents a two-dimensional fullwave analysis method to investigate an SIW circuit composed of metal and dielectric posts. It combines the cylindrical eigenfunction expansion and the method of moments to avoid geometrical descritization of the posts. The method is presented step-by-step, with all the necessary formulations provided for a practitioner who wants to implement this method by himself. This book covers the SIW circuit printed on either homogeneous or inhomogeneous substrate, the microstrip-to-SIW transition and the speed-up technique for the simulation of symmetrical SIW circuits. Different types of SIW circuits are shown and simulated using the proposed method. In addition, several slot antennas and horn antennas fabricated using the SIW technology are also given. Table of Contents: Introduction / SIW Circuits Composed of Metallic Posts / SIW Circuits with Dielectric Posts / Even-Odd Mode Analysis of a Symmetrical Circuit / Microstrip to SIW Transition and Half Mode SIW / SIW Antennas

Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is a twenty-first century transmission line that has evolved recently to open new doors to the development of efficient circuits and devices operating in the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency range. Microstrip circuits and devices are inefficient at high frequency applications and require very stringent manufacturing tolerances when used to implement microwave and millimeter-wave components. This is as a result of the fact that wavelengths are short at higher frequencies. Waveguide circuits and devices are preferred for higher frequency applications, but they are expensive and difficult to manufacture. It is also very challenging to integrate a waveguide device with planar devices in its vicinity. The SIW bridges the gap between the traditional air-filled waveguide and planar transmission lines such as microstrip. Practical Approach to Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) Diplexer: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an essential reference source that discusses the development of efficient circuits and devices operating in the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency range through the use of substrate integrated waveguides. Featuring research on topics such as microstrip resonators, circuit model analysis, and quality factor extraction, this book is ideally designed for researchers, engineers, scientists, developers, scholars, practitioners, educators, policymakers, and students.

The millimeter-wave frequency band (30–300 GHz) is considered a potential candidate to host very high data rate communications. First used for high capacity radio links and then for broadband indoor wireless networks, the interest in this frequency band has increased as it is proposed to accommodate future 5G mobile communication systems. The large bandwidth available will enable a number of new uses for 5G. In addition, due to the large propagation attenuation, this frequency band may provide some additional advantages regarding frequency reuse and communication security. However, a number of issues have to be addressed to make mm-wave communications viable. This book collects a number of contributions that present solutions to these challenges.

The use of Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) in the design of microwave band pass filter has been very popular in recent years. Attractive SIW filters include compact size, high power handling capability and low loss. The aim of this project is to design and investigate the performance of RF filter using Half-mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide (HMSIW) technique. The project is divided into three major parts, design, simulation and fabrication. The report starts with a brief literature review followed by details on the most important aspects of building a filter. The simulation software's used are briefly discussed with the key aspects of individual and how they are being used in the design and simulation process. The next section comprises of details about the design process combining with bulk simulation data and also the fabrication process of the filter. The section compares data after methodical changes brought to the filter and concludes by discussing about the final experimental data. The following section briefly summarizes all the simulation performed on a multilayer filter, and observes how certain changes to the filter affect the response.
