The semiconductor industry is a vital industry for military establishments worldwide, and the control of, or loss of control of, this key industry has enormous strategic implications. This book focuses on the globalization of the strategic semiconductor industry and the security ramifications of this process. It examines in particular the migration of the Taiwanese chip industry to China as part of the globalization of production processes, and the extent to which such a globalization process poses security challenges to the United States, China and Taiwan. Transcending disciplinary boundaries between international political economy, security studies, and the history of science and technology, this multidisciplinary work provides an in-depth understanding of the globalization-security nexus, and disentangles the key policy issues connected to a potential explosive flashpoint in world politics today.

With unflinching honesty, Teddy Assaly shares his journey from self-destructive behaviours to sobriety and recovery. The eldest of eight children, Teddy grew up feeling the pressure to be perfect. Feeling that no matter what he did, he could never do right, he became reckless and, in his teens, found escape in drugs, sex, and partying. After college and meeting a girl, he decided to set up his life on the East Coast, away from his family’s home in Ontario. But despite finding a great group of friends on the East Coast, living the dream, and being sober for a few years, he could not close the void within him, and by his late twenties, his life began to spiral out of control. Fuelled by cocaine and alcohol, his day benders became weeklong, and his addiction took on a life of its own. It wasn’t until his darkest day—a near death experience—that he was able to truly confront himself, reflect on his life, and begin his ascent to recovery. In this deeply personal memoir, Teddy shows us how through sheer determination, hard work, and by incorporating the teachings of Alcoholics Anonymous, Stoic philosophy, and spirituality into his life, he was able to turn his trials into triumphs. An inspiring, insightful, and brave, The Chips Are on the Table is about finding hope and courage when all is lost.

In May of 2009, my husband was severely injured at the geothermal plant where he worked. He suffered second and third-degree burns over 73 percent of his body after falling into a hole filled with 140-degree brine water. Miracles began happening right before our eyes. He was able to climb out of the hole by himself, run the length of a football field to wash off, and ended up being flown to a trauma hospital where a world-renowned doctor would begin the tedious task of stapling cadaver tissue onto all of his burns. I created a web page on CaringBridge and began journaling as a means of communication with family and friends who lived four or more hours away. The response was overwhelming as you will attest to when you start turning the pages. There is no doubt in my mind that all the prayers and words of comfort played a big part in Mark's healing process. I also believe the Holy Spirit comforted me and gave me the strength I needed to be there for my husband. ***Cover photo taken near the entrance of the Coso Operating Plant.

To the world at large, technology was synonymous with software. Within months, the subject of such conversations has changed dramatically. Today, the hardware that runs all software - semiconductors or chips - has become a subject of WhatsApp groups and international politics. The chip shortage during COVID-19 made governments take notice of this complex supply chain. The US began denying advanced semiconductors to Chinese companies. Worsening China-Taiwan relations further intensified the debate. By 2022, China, the US, India, the EU, and Japan had released plans worth billions of dollars for setting up new semiconductor facilities. This book is a comprehensive overview of this “meta-critical” technology. How are semiconductors important from a geopolitical perspective? Why did the US and Taiwan become powerhouses in this domain while Russia and India fell behind? Is China's semiconductor sector a threat to the world? What are the future trends to watch out for? These are the questions that this book answers.
