The story of the Minorcans in America is well chronicled. Minorcans (Menorcans) and St. Augustine, Florida are both unique. Spain had the first permanent settlement in America (St. Augustine). By the time Jamestown was founded by the English, St. Augustine was an established town. These short stories reflect a life well-lived because of the unconditional love of a Minorcan: my wife, Malinda Usina Jones. The stories are true and might make you feel almost as good as tasting true Minorcan gumbo with a drop or two of datil pepper sauce in the bowl.

A Minorcan Family Heritage highlights a beautiful culture that appeared in 1768 and continues to this day primarily in St. Augustine, Florida. These exceptional immigrants left their homes on the Isle of Menorca and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. They had signed contracts to become indentured servants of Dr. Andrew Turnbull. After serving from seven to nine years at his indigo plantation in New Smyrna, Florida, they would be free and given a tract of land. Over 1400 Minorcans began the trip from Menorca. When they fled from the plantation in 1777, they had to walk 70 miles on King's Highway, to a bustling St. Augustine. They arrived when the American Revolution was being fought. The British flag flew in St. Augustine from 1763 to 1783 and during the war over 15,000 Loyalists escaped from the Colonies seeking refuge and passage out. The Minorcans were present for this mass exodus as well as the Indian Wars, the War of 1812, the Civil War and both World Wars. A Minorcan Family Heritage tells the exciting story of Antonio and Catalina Usina and one line of descendants in the Usina family.

Excerpt from The History of Saint Augustine, Florida This brief outline of the history of one of the most interesting portions of our country, together with the sketches of the celebrated characters and memorable events which have rendered the town of St. Augustine famous throughout the world, is offered to the public in the hope and expectation that the information herein contained may supply the desire, felt by an ever-increasing number of its citizens and visitors, to be better informed as to the early history of a place so justly celebrated. The desire of the author has been to condense and render accessible to the general reader the very interesting but elaborate accounts of the early writers concerning some of the more notable events connected with the early settlement and defense of St. Augustine. Copious quotations have been borrowed, and the quaint language of the early historians has been retained as peculiarly appropriate to the subject and locality described. The traditions and chronicles in possession of the descendants of the early settlers have been sought with a desire to preserve these fragments of history before it shall be too late. Already those conversant with the events of the early years of the century have passed from the stage of life. "In recent years, Americans have become frustrated with the troubled relationship between religion and politics: an exclusive claim on faith and values from the right and a radical divorce of faith from politics on the left. Now a new group of religious leaders is re-envisioning religion in public life and blazing a trail that goes beyond partisan politics to work for a more just and inclusive society. Progressive & Religious draws on nearly one hundred in-depth interviews with Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist leaders to tell the story of this dynamic, emerging movement." "Robert P. Jones explains how progressive religious leaders are tapping the deep connections between religion and social justice to work on issues like poverty and workers' rights, the environment, health care, pluralism, and human rights."--BOOK JACKET.
