This work will serve as a manual for pastors, local churches, and chaplains, preparing them for effective extension of local church ministry through chaplaincy. Reading this manual will prepare pastors and chaplains to comfort those who wonder if God will forgive them when they take a life in the line of duty. Studying the history and necessity of chaplaincy will inform men considering chaplaincy of its conflicts and rigors. Learning about the problems and potential of separatist ministry in a pluralistic environment will allay the fears of pastors and local churches unfamiliar with the chaplaincy. Additionally, familiarity with the chaplaincy as a biblical vocation will help local churches to be more supportive of chaplains, and chaplains more faithful to their sending local churches. - Purpose.

The book has common challenges that most single and married families experience as a member of the armed forces. It has numerous stories of problems, hope, friendships, joys, changes, and military moves from one assignment to the next. There is humor throughout the book, as being single and then married with children. There is reflection on the pride of being a member of the United States Air Force and working with others in a team effort. There is the fear felt by parents when their sons and daughters enter the military and the worry of whether their assignments will be to friendly or hostile situations. Emphasis is placed on the many friendships possible in the communities around the military installations. Emphasis is also placed on worship and being a part of the air base, army post, or naval station chapel program, being members of local churches, for families starting up new congregations and bible studies. In overseas areas, it can be a lifetime experience making friends with local people such as our family with French, German and Filipinos and American missionaries in those areas. The thrust of the book is to reach the hands of service men and women and their families and also churches and clubs who want to support their military away from home. The ninth chapter deals with my coming retirement and the struggle to move it to another career field, or in my case the preaching ministry.

The church is called to provide clergy for the military. Seminaries educate and prepare students. But there are complexities, controversies, and criticisms. Many seminary and college professors have no experience in the military. Understanding these dilemmas, Paul Linzey and Keith Travis created a much-needed resource. They both have mentored hundreds of chaplains, pastors, and ministerial students. The result is a comprehensive book about serving as a military chaplain in the twenty-first century. Drawing from their experience as chaplain, professor, endorsing agent, and chief of Army chaplain recruiting, they provide a professional resource for anyone interested in ministry to people in the military. Their records, qualifications, and expertise combine to provide a comprehensive, passionate, and authoritative look at serving as a chaplain in today's military. The book is well-researched, true to real life, and up-to-date. It is unparalleled in scope.
