"Olaniyan has given us a profound and beautifully integrated book which culminates in a persuasive interpretation of the relationship between Fela's apparently incompatible presentational selves.... The book's accessible and evocative prose is in itself a kind of homage to Fela's continual ability to seduce and astonish.... This is such an attractive book you feel like... ransacking your collection for Fela tapes." -- Karin Barber "... an indispensable companion to Fela's music and a rich source of information for studies in modern African popular music." -- Akin Euba Arrest the Music! is a lively musical study of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, one of Africa's most recognizable, popular, and controversial musicians. The flamboyant originator of the "Afrobeat" sound and self-proclaimed voice of the voiceless, Fela used music, sharp-tongued lyrics, and derisive humor to challenge the shortcomings of Nigerian and postcolonial African states. Looking at the social context, instrumentation, lyrics, visual art, people, and organizations through which Fela produced his music, Tejumola Olaniyan offers a wider, more suggestive perspective on Fela and his impact on listeners in all parts of the world. Placing Fela front and center, Olaniyan underscores important social issues such as authenticity, racial and cultural identity, the relationship of popular culture to radical politics, and the meaning of postcolonialism, nationalism, and globalism in contemporary Africa. Readers interested in music, culture, society, and politics, whether or not they know Fela and his music, will find this work invaluable for understanding the career of an African superstar and the politics of popular culture in contemporary Africa. Decades ago, Stephen Hawking had predicted that an acceptable equation to a grand unified theory would arrive by the year 2020. He was right! Jesus is the Beam is an autobiography brimming with philosophical ideas from a supernatural journey with God and an unquenchable desire to know the fundamental truth about our origin. The origin of not just our own species, but to know the truth about the spark of life and the energy which sustains it. Gwynevere Lamb challenges all conventional theories of everything as she presents an intuitive pre-numerical formula to the four standard forces of energy and all life as we know it, re-illustrating time and space. She slices in half the nucleus of our reality with a nuclear knife without the need of an atom smasher! Finally a simple, sensible, and satisfactory equation to a grand unified field even a 2nd grader can understand! The author's journey continues in her 2nd installment, God is the Boom, as she dissects truth from fiction (in light of her grand unified equation) in all things (from scientific discoveries to human behaviors), giving new meaning to the theory of everything. The story climbs to an epic ending summing up both books on the summit of Mount Calvary as she explains the purpose of the cross of Jesus Christ in quantum mechanical terms. The author has a knack of explaining continuums of time and space as well as parental discipline. She makes math and science (to include particle physics) understandable to persons without any scientific background by painting pictures with her words as well as thrilling readers with adventurous real-life-stories. Gwynevere Lamb (using the poetry of math and science) stitches the fabric of time and space to earth, air, water, and fire and just about everything else. She explains how the “Fire of God” becomes hellfire in sub-atomic scenarios. On the other end of the spectrum she paints a picture of love flowing like living water. She offers a myriad of continuums not exclusive to particle physics. She seamlessly threads the needle to include human life sciences and social and political ideas commonly taught in todays media-driven pop paradigm set by our modern new age culture. She leaves the reader with an acute awareness of what the singularity is, what unified purification is, and why it is central to our existence. Jesus is the Beam and God is the Boom was originally written as one manuscript. Dividing them into two separate books was initially a concern for the author because she did not want her readers to miss the climax at the end of the story. She came to terms with the “separation” after realizing that Jesus is the Beam rests on God is the Boom (literally), thereby making it a blessing in disguise. She is confident readers will be enamored at the end of the first book and equally eager to pick up the second with anticipation. Gwynevere Lamb believes her readers will be satisfied and “well fed” after consuming both books, however, a third and fourth installment are already in the making... in the writing.

A daily diary of actual interactions between a reference desk librarian and his patrons Reference Librarianship documents a year in the life of a young librarian working in the “trenches” at a library in the Midwestern United States. This one-of-a-kind book provides a daily diary of every librarian/patron transaction—no matter how mundane or absurd—to demonstrate not only how advances in technology have affected the reference librarian’s job, but how the public’s expectations have changed, as well. The book also includes observations by a now-retired reference librarian on the current state of the field based on these unedited interactions. Over the past two decades, the job of reference librarian has seen many changes. But in many ways, reference desk work hasn’t changed a bit, with its mix of odd, humorous, routine, and ridiculous requests that capture what it’s like to deal with patrons day after day. Reference Librarianship paints a clear picture of the field for library school students, provides emotional and philosophical support to practitioners, and reminds library administrators of what life was like on the “front lines.” A sampling of the daily transactions documented in Reference Librarianship: Monday, May 19, 2003: pencil pencil network down I tell people that I can’t sign them up for an Internet terminal because the network is down and they just stand there, staring into space One of them asks for three days worth of newspapers microfiche machine explanation Sorry, Sir, the network is still down (multiply by twenty and insert randomly into the remainder of the day) magic tricks, but he pretty much knew where they were One of our large interior plate glass windows shattered. No one was hurt and it made a fascinating noise, like a crystal waterfall landing on soil. “Books on prostitution, you know—whores?” Someone from the County called to ask if any criminal activity had occurred on a particular street. Someone else referred her to us. She was dubious—with good reason. “Math puzzles.” Okay. I show him the books. “Just math.” Certainly. I show him the books. “I need them in Spanish.” Grrr ... Reference Librarianship is an enlightening, educational, and entertaining look at the real world of reference desk work. It’s an essential read for reference librarians (both public and academic), library administrators, and library school students, as well as anyone who works with the public.
