Metallurgical examination, including Brinell hardness surveys, fracture tests for steel soundness and fibre and macroetch tests was conducted on each of the twelve plates furnished by Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. Microscopic examination was made on three plates and a chemical analysis taken of one. All samples fractured in a fibrous manner and were satisfactory with respect to steel soundness.

A metallurgical examination was conducted on twelve (12) 2 1/2 in thick rolled homogeneous and sixteen (16) 2 1/2 in thick rolled face hardened armor plates manufactured by Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation on OCO-D project 1558. The results of this investigation that, in general, the steel soundness of the face hardened plates was inferior to that of the homogeneous plates. In this connection, the face hardened plates had more pronounced directional properties than the homogeneous plates. The average Brinell hardness of the homogeneous plates was 247-262. The average Brinell hardness of the face hardened series was found to be face, 465-690, and core 208-243. The depth of the effective case at Rockwell C 50 varied from .26 in- 40-in. from the plate (10 plates tested) while in two face hardened plates the case depth was .09-in - 16-in from face of plate. In general, the homogeneous and face hardened plates were properly heat treated resulting in fibrous fractures, good V-notch impact properties and a satisfactory microstructure.

Metallurgical examination, including Brinell hardness surveys, fracture tests for steel soundness and fibre, macro-etch tests, and microscopic examination, was conducted on each of the twelve armor plates furnished by Republic Steel Corp. Chemical analyses were taken of two plates. All plates were satisfactorily heat treated as revealed by the fibre test. However, a trace of crystallinity was evident in the two plates with a hardness of over 360. Plate 4-1, although completely fibrous, exhibited an appreciable amount of ferrite which indicated faulty heat treatment. The improper fibre test indication was undoubtedly because of the abnormally low hardness of this plate.

This 1944 report discusses a metallurgical examination, including fracture tests for steel soundness and response to heat treatment, Brinell hardness tests, macroetch tests and microscopic examination, which was conducted on sections from six 1 inch thick homogeneous plates. Steel soundness was satisfactory on all but one plate. Poor shock properties, as denoted by crystalline fractures, were observed on all plates at hardnesses above 340 Brinell.

In connection with the development of 1/4 inch armor plate for Specification AXS-488, Revision 2, fourteen Bisston plates were examined for the purpose of correlating fracture tests for steel soundness of fibre characteristics with macro quality and microstructure. Correlations were made between fracture tests for fibre and microstructure and steel soundness and macrostructure. The steel plates, which were rolled from five heats, were of fair quality. No definite correlations were evident between steel soundness and ballistic tests, probably because the ballistic tests are inordinately severe.

Metallurgical examination, including fracture tests, Brinell hardness surveys, chemical analysis, macroscopic examination, and microscopic examination, was made on sections from 2 1/2-in, 3-in, 4-in, and 65-in thick ballistic test plates that had been made from the same hear and had been submitted jointly by Standard Steel Spring Company and Great Lakes Steel Corporation to Aberdeen Proving Ground for experimental and acceptance ballistic tests. The extensive spalling revealed by the ballistic tests was found to have been caused by extremely poor steel soundness. Because of the numerous laminations present in the fractures, the impact toughness of the plates could not be determined accurately. However, fractures of the 4-in and 6-in plates showed much crystallinity, and each plate, except the 3-in plate, was revealed by Brinell hardness surveys and microscopic examination to have been incompletely quench hardened. Grain sizes were coarse (ASTM No. 2 to 4). When evaluating the ballistic limits of at least the 4-in and 6-in plates, their poor impact toughness as well as their poor steel soundness should be considered.
