Merced County has over half of its population living in poverty and residents lack access to healthy food options, recreational parks, facilities, and safe neighborhoods where people can participate in physical activity. The purpose of this graduate project was to organize and facilitate a grassroots, community driven event that promoted physical activity for families affected by adverse modifiable factors to health. The project manager uses the Asset-Based Community Development approach by discovering a community’s capacities and assets and using them to empower community members (Kretzmann & McKnight, 1993). Eight objectives centered around using the community’s assets are the guiding steps towards making this event a success. All objectives were met and approximately 300 people attended the Family Fitness Fair. Data collected from surveys indicate that 98% of attendees agreed that the event motivated them to be more active with their family, and the same percentage reported that they would participate in another event like this one in the future. Recommendations for improvement include developing more subcommittees to help plan and develop future events. A substantial amount of funding was left, at the conclusion of the project, and will be used as “seed money” towards hosting a second event. A key to the success of this event is that community buy-in was obtained for this project. Due to the success of the event, the project manager plans to make this an annual event to continue to promote physical fitness in disadvantaged communities across Merced County.
