The Medical Research Council (MRC) supports research into all areas of medical and related science with the aim of improving the health and quality of life in the UK, as well directing training needs and disseminating research knowledge to promote economic competitiveness and to enhance public awareness of medical research. The MRC receives an annual grant-in-aid from Parliament through the Office of Science and Technology, (now part of the Department of Trade and Industry), as well as funding through other government departments, international agencies, industry and medical research charities. This annual report and accounts covers its activities and performance during the year from 1 April 2002 to 31 March 2003.
