Excerpt from Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol. 2 Mr. Shriver placed the fish in a perforated tin bucket made to pass through the openings, or man-holes, of the water tanks which were constantly supplied with fresh water. Fish of small size, but fresh and active, were placed in the bucket, and aecom panying his precious charges on each of several trips, Mr. Shriver placed them in fine order in the canal basin at Cumberland, from whence they could pass up or down the river. This privilege, it will appear, the fish of at least one species availed themselves of extensively. Mr. Shriver with commendable perseverance transferred five kinds of fine game fish (about twelve of each kind) into the Potomac during the autumn of 1854, making six trips on the railroad. Excerpt from Maryland Historical Magazine, 1911, Vol. 6 This building was the first free school house in Queen Anne's County and was built by one John Salisbury, who was to be paid one hundred pounds therefor and to use such timber and fire wood on said school as necessary. The persons who authorized the building of this house were appointed under an act of the Assembly passed in 1723 and were known as the Visitors of the Free School of Queen Anne's County. The first visitors were Rev. Christopher Wilkenson, Richard Tilghman, Samuel Earle, Sr., William Tarbut, Augustine Thompson, Edward Wright and Philemon Lloyd, and by law were made a body politic and given the power to appoint their successors in office, and to make all by-laws, be no ways contrary to the royal prerogative nor to the laws and statutes of England and Acts of Assembly of the province or to the canons and constitutions of the Church of England by law established. The visitors of this school were the leading men of Queen Anne's County during the colonial period, and among the scholars were the forefathers of many of the prominent men since. Among the masters were several who gained world wide distinction in their chosen walks of life. To those therefore who are interested in the history of this State it will be well worth the while to study the history of this school as told by the minutes of the meetings of the visitors, which we are glad to say have been wonderfully well preserved. Excerpt from Maryland Historical Magazine, 1922, Vol. 17 They were strong men on both sides in those days, and they expressed their feelings with great bitterness. General Trimble was no exception to the rule. But it is pleasant to note in the light of his expressions of implacable hatred to the Union, that Princeton University has recently placed, in her oldest and most historic building, a tablet in memory of her sixty-two sons who gave up their lives in the Civil War. It is a coincidence that just thirty one were in the Union Army, and thirty-one in the Confederate. But it is a striking proof of this happier day that their names are carved in alphabetical order, without any indication as to whether they wore the blue or the gray. They were all Americans.
