The incredible story of Sister Mary MacKillop, from nun to saint. 'It's the nuns I remember. An oddity to outsiders; mainstream to any Catholic. Hardly a classroom was without one. they were young and in charge, and role models for the girls who looked up at them from the desks. they weren't part of the clergy; they couldn't take Holy Orders like priests ... but they were leaders, career women, women in the church who had a role, an alternative authority, belonging to a community of convent life which, like their heavy clothing, separated them from everyday society. ' It was Mary MacKillop's miracles of healing that led her to be canonised as Australia's first saint, but perhaps her greatest and most important legacy to the world was the religious order she founded over a century ago. Mary MacKillop's sisters - the sisters of Saint Joseph - have been teaching and setting up schools all over Australia and New Zealand since 1867, bringing education to those who could not afford it, regardless of their religion. In this fascinating collection of interviews, Anne Henderson reveals the inner lives of the sisters of Saint Joseph. through their own words, the sisters reflect on their work, their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and what these mean in the modern world. Providing a fascinating insight into the lives of these inspiring and deeply committed women, Mary MacKillop's Sisters is an invaluable social history and a fascinating read.

This is the sixth collection to be published. It focusses on the time not long after Mary MacKillop's excommunication when she was encouraged to go to Rome to seek approval for the Rule of the Sisters of St Joseph. Mary set off alone, travelling incognito, with little money and no knowledge of where to stay or how she would travel. Her letters and her diary during 1873 show her amazing trust in the Providence of God as well as her very human feelings of loneliness, her worry about the Sisters back in Australia and her delight in visiting the holy places especially St Peter's Basilica. Little did Mary MacKillop dream that in 2010 thousands would gather in St Peter's Square to see her photo hanging from the Basilica as she was proclaimed a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI.

Mother Mary MacKillop was dearly loved by the Sisters she served as these letters attest. At the same time she commanded total respect and obedience, not just because she was the Founder of the Sisters of St Joseph but because she led by example in everything she asked the Sisters to be and do. Her great love for God naturally flowed into humble service, and she was as at home establishing new communities in cities as she was being Little Sister for just a few in a remote place. These letters speak in great reverence of Mother Mary. They show us a rare glimpse of her personal side, her discipline and stamina, her humour and her fondness for her Sisters, and give a unique insight into life in the early Sisterhood. This special book has come about because of the careful stewardship of Josephite archivists over the years and also because of the desire of the Towards Canonisation Committee to have a special publication to mark the Canonisation of Mary MacKillop. This will be the culmination of the long process begun in 1925 when these memories were collected.
