This ONR award has significantly helped the PI and his research group to survive and develop. Major achievements include students training, technology transfer to DoD product, and research accomplishments. Eight Ph. D students and eight M.S. students have been supported by this ONR project. Of these 16 Ph. D/M.S. students, 4 Ph. D students and 4 M.S. students are women. In this ONR project, we have systematically studied radar sensor networks, which include sense-through-foliage target detection using FOPEN radar and radar sensor network, UWB radar for Sense-through-foliage channel modeling and foliage clutter modeling, waveform design and diversity in radar sensor networks, multi-target detection in radar sensor networks, UWB noise radar for sense-through-wall channel modeling, and compressive sensing for radar and radar sensor networks, etc. Sixty-five papers have been produced during this project and are attached to this final technical report. Our research results on Foliage Penetration (FOPEN) radar and radar sensor networks have been transferred to US Air Force for their laser imaging through clouds product. The algorithms from this ONR project could be integrated into existing Navy and Marine Corps' radar sensor systems such as Tactical Remote Sensor System (TRSS), Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS), Tier II Pioneer Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), Expeditionary Tactical Area Surveillance System (ETASS), Critical Area Protection System (CAPS), etc. The research will directly benefit DoD netcentricity based programs and concepts including Navy FORCEnet, Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS), Transparent Urban Structures (TUS) program, etc.

The proposal of the School was made in 1998 to three institutions, which responded enthusiastically: The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), its main co-sponsor, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, both in Trieste, Italy, and the Chancellor's Office, Universidad Simon Bolfvar (USB). The secretarial and logistic support was provided in Trieste by the ICTP and in Caracas by USB and the IDEA Convention Center. In addition the event was generously supported by the following institutes, agencies, foundations and academies: NASA Headquarters, European Space Agency, TALVEN Programme, (Delegacion Permanente de Venezuela ante la UNESCO), The SETI Institute, Centro Latinoamericano .de Ffsica, The Third World Academy of Sciences, Academia de Ciencias Ffsicas, Matematicas y Naturales, Red Latinoamericana de Biologfa, The Planetary Society, The Latin American Academy of Sciences (Fondo ACAL), Alberto Vollmer Foundation, Inc, Fundacion J. Oro, Associated to the Catalonian Research Foundation, Red Latinoamericana de Astronomfa and Colegio Emil Friedman. A total of 36 lectures were delivered by 20 lecturers, of which 14 were from the following countries: Argentina, Mexico, Italy, Spain and the USA. Six lecturers were from the host country. In addition there were 5 chairpersons from the host country that were not participants; two participants acted as chairpersons (Pedro Benitez and Tomas Revilla).

This technical note reports on the attitude determination of Air Force Rocket No. A31.603 on which an ion emission experiment was performed. Two orthogonal magnetometers, one facing forward along the rocket spin axis and the other facing sideways, provide magnetic field component data. The bias-offset and scaling (signal conversion) factor are not given, but can be determined in a sinusoidal approximation. The algorithm used for generating magnetic pitch angles is discussed and an error analysis is provided. In a local vertical coordinate system, two sets of elevation angles are found for the tumbling rocket, and the set that satisfies an initial condition exactly is the correct one. The deviation of the rocket tumbling plane from the vertical plane can be determined at the times of closest encounter of the magnetic field vector and rocket vector. The deviation at all times can be approximately determined by sinusoidal curve fitting with tumbling frequency. The angles between the rocket vector and moonlight vector during the instants of moonviews at the onboard camera are also calculated. (Author).

Public and academic debate about ‘porn culture’ is proliferating. Ironically, what is often lost in these debates is a sense of what is specific about pornography. By focusing on pornography’s mainstream – contemporary commercial products for a heterosexual male audience – Everyday Pornography offers the opportunity to reconsider what it is that makes pornography a specific form of industrial practice and genre of representation. Everyday Pornography presents original work from scholars from a range of academic disciplines (Media Studies, Law, Sociology, Psychology, Women’s Studies, Political Science), introducing new methodologies and approaches whilst reflecting on the ongoing value of older approaches. Among the topics explored are: the porn industry’s marketing practices (spam emails, reviews) and online organisation commercial sex in Second Life the pornographic narratives of phone sex and amateur videos the content of best-selling porn videos how the male consumer is addressed by pornography, represented within the mainstream, understood by academics and contained by legislation. This collection places a particular emphasis on anti-pornography feminism, a movement which has been experiencing a revival since the mid-2000s. Drawing on the experiences of activists alongside academics, Everyday Pornography offers an opportunity to explore the intellectual and political challenges of anti-pornography feminism and consider its relevance for contemporary academic debate.

The emergence of civil aviation as a means of mass transportation is primarily due to the large scale construction of jet airplanes in the past 30 years or so. A large number of these jet airplanes is currently operating at or beyond their designed fatigue lives. Thus, the structural integrity of these aging airplanes has become an issue of major concern to all nations of the world. To bring the needed technical and research focus on the issues involved in the life-enhancement and safety-assurance of aging airplanes, the Federal Aviation Administration sponsored a symposium in Atlanta, GA, USA, during 20-22 March 1990. This symposium, under the title "International Symposium on Structural Integrity of Aging Airplanes· was organized jointly be the Georgia Institute of Technology (Center for Computational Mechanics) and the Transportation Systems Center (Cambridge, MA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Industrial and academic experts from several countries in North America, Europe and Asia, were invited to discuss their experiences and proposed solutions. This monograph contains the original papers that represent the expanded and edited versions of the talks presented at this symposium. This book aims to bring the collective experience, from across the world, with problems related to the structural integrity of aging airplanes to the attention of the professional and research community at large - in the hope that it may stimulate further fruitful research on this important topic of global concern.

This classic monograph on unsteady transonic flow — the flow of air encountered at speeds at or near the speed of sound — is of continuing interest to students and professionals in aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and other areas of applied mathematics. After a brief Introduction, Swedish physicist Mårten T. Landahl presents a chapter in which the two-dimensional solution is derived, succeeded by a discussion of its relation to the subsonic and supersonic solutions. Three chapters on low aspect ratio configurations follow, covering triangular wings and similar planforms with curved leading edges, rectangular wings, and cropped delta wings, and low aspect ratio wing-body combinations. The treatment concludes with a consideration of the experimental determination of air forces on oscillating wings at transonic speeds.
