Excerpt from Marshall's Spelling Book of the English Language, or the Teacher's Assistant: In Which the Orthography and Pronunciation Are in Accordance With the Principles of Walker; Designed for the Use of Common Schools It should be Observed, that all unaccented syllables, termi nating with a Roman c preserve the antecedent vowel in the 'same syllable, long, as the i in pine, &c.; but when the con cluding e is italick, the other vowel is short, as the i in ex amine, See. The final 49 in accented syllables is mute, as the figures denote the sounds of the vowels over which they are placed. Walker pronounces many words in several ways; but generally in this work, the preferable one only is pointed out. Where any doubts exist, reference can be had to his large Critical Pronouncing Dictionary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
