This book tells the story of how people struggled to define, reform, and overturn racial etiquette as a social guide for Southern Rhodesian politics. Underlying what appears to be a static history of racial etiquette is a dynamic narrative of anxieties over racial, gender, and generational status. From the outlawing of "insolence" toward officials to a last-ditch "courtesy campaign" in the early 1960s, white elites believed that their nimble use of racial etiquette would contain Africans' desire for social and political change. In turn, Africans mobilized around stories of racial humiliation. Allison Shutt's research provides a microhistory of the changing discourse about manners and respectability in Southern Rhodesia that by the 1950s had become central to fiercely contested political positions and nationalist tactics. Intense debates among Africans and whites alike over the deployment of courtesy and rudeness reveal the social-emotional tensions that contributed to political mobilization on the part of nationalists and the narrowing of options for the course of white politics. Drawing on public records, legal documents, and firsthand accounts, this first book-length history of manners in twentieth-century colonial Africa provides a compelling new model for understanding politics and culture through the prism of etiquette. Allison K. Shutt is professor of history at Hendrix College.

Download History, Manners & Customs of Indian Nations (Pennsylvania and the Neighboring States) Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. From the Introduction: "The reader of the following pages, having already seen what has induced me to come forward with an historical account of the Indians, after so many have written on the same subject, will perhaps look for something more extraordinary in this than in other works of the kind which he has seen. Not wishing any one to raise his expectations too high, I shall briefly state that I have not written to excite astonishment, but for the information of those who are desirous of knowing the true history of those people, who, for centuries, have been in full possession of the country we now inhabit; but who have since emigrated to a great distance."

"History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations Who Once Inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighbouring States" by John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder is a remarkable historical exploration that immerses readers in the rich tapestry of Native American heritage in Pennsylvania and its surrounding regions. Heckewelder's meticulous research and deep respect for the subject matter shine through in this compelling work. As a Moravian missionary who lived among the Delaware and other Native American communities, he brings a level of authenticity and understanding that is truly commendable. This book not only provides a vivid and respectful account of the customs and traditions of these indigenous nations but also offers valuable insights into their interactions with European settlers, a perspective often absent from conventional historical narratives. For those intrigued by Native American history, early American settlers, or a more profound understanding of Pennsylvania's past, this book is an invaluable resource, presenting an often-overlooked facet of American history with clarity and reverence.

Reading these essays and the editors' enlightening introduction was a joy: I learned a great deal, smiled and laughed with uncommon regularity, and marveled at the quality of this remarkable collection." -William M. Tsutsui, author of Godzilla on My Mind "This book is full of fascinating insights. Well-written and often witty, it captures a detailed snapshot of Japanese society in the early 21st century.
