Life in the northwest wilderness of Michigan during the lumberjack era makes an exciting and engaging story and who better to tell it than someone who actually lived there during this time. Mason Ray was a citizen in Leelanau County, Michigan from 1880 until 1922. She knew stalwart lumberjacks, the people that owned and ran the lumber mills, their neighbors, and the other strong-hearted citizens of the area and she describes them in her novel in vivid details. Her story follows the life of a man named Forrest Mann as he becomes part of the community and includes danger, deceit, intrigue, romance and love. The characters are believable and become like friends as the story unfolds. The local landmarks are real - the town (Agache is Glen Arbor on the shores of Lake Michigan); Muskrat Lake (is Glen Lake); the narrows bridge and the sand dunes. The language and terms are of that period (with a few tweaks).

Illustrated throughout with stunning color photographs, Purebred and Homegrown is an affectionate and thoughtful look at the history of county fairs, and their tradition and persistence today, despite the diminished number of Americans who earn their living from agriculture.

"Industry in the Wilderness by Frank Rasky is an account of the overcoming of natural elements in order to harvest the resource wealth of northwestern Ontario. It is part of the Dundurn Local History series. It is an oral history of lumberjacks, gold seekers, bush pilots, and early hydro men. Herein lies the major problem with the book. Rasky attempts to cover four important aspects of northwestern Ontario in only 128 pages. This impossible task is even further complicated by the fact that more than half of the book is devoted to pictures and diagrams ... The pictures and diagrams dominate the book to such an extent that one could ignore the text and still find a wealth of information about the topic. The diagrams of a paper mill, a gold mine, and a hydro-electric power plant could be a valuable teaching aid to students interested in those areas. The pictures are exceptionally good."--Umanitoba.ca/cm/cmarchive/vol12no5/industryinthewilderness.html.

Filled with photographs, both historic and contemporary, this engaging book looks at the industrial pioneers of northwestern Ontario, and the activities which brought them to the wilderness: surveying, railroading, lumber, gold, bush piloting, transportation, and hydro power. Rasky lets the pioneers tell their own story, through their own reminiscences, and by the monuments they have left behind. New Jersey transplant and sassy brunette Annisa Gobrowski has a problem-literally everyone at her Florida high school is blonde. No lack of golden highlights is going to stop Annisa from making the cheerleading squad. But after accidentally breaking the most popular girl in school's nose, and discovering the cheerleaders all hate her, she starts having second thoughts. Is it too much to ask to land a spot on the team, win the heart of her dreamy crush and make tons of new friends? Annisa is on the verge of giving up, but the cheerleader in her just won't let her quit. She may be a little different, but Sand Dune High had better watch out-this non-blonde is here to stay in this hilariously funny novel from Private author Kieran Scott.
